freezepops posted:Switching circuits open/closed is typically handled by circuit breakers which have very fast operating times (typically less than 83ms). The impulse generated by switching events is considered when designing a substation and choosing equipment so that the insulation in a substation is appropriate based on the expected switching voltages. The speed of interruption isnt a very significant factor in the voltage impulse, the biggest factor is the time difference between when the current is interrupted and when a normal power system 0 crossing would have taken place. A manual switch isnt going to have good control of this value as the arc is an open air and the contacts are parting slowly. Hey thanks for keeping my poor understanding from propagating. I don't know where I picked up that tidbit of bullshit but yeah I guess with all of the power factor correction capacitors at substations you really wouldn't expect much additional overvoltage just from magnetizing inductance in the transformers or whatever I was thinking when the switches open.

What if they make the boats even bigger but also add bit inflatable bumpers on the side of the canal like when I go to bowling alley and don't want to worry about the gutter?

I think that they should get big balloons, tie them on straps that you put under the hull, and fill the bags with helium. The ship floats free and can be towed anywhere in the world!

A fender won't do much against a ship of that size just barrelling into the wall. These kinds of systems actually exist around some infrastructure, usually partially submerged, to redirect collisions at very shallow angles.

I'm afraid they're gonna have to toss the whole Suez and build a new one to build a new canal in.

Actually, if they lengthen the ships even more, their angle of impact will necessarily be very shallow and it's harder to get stuck

They should try asking the ship nicely. Or maybe this is a cry for help. Someone qualified needs to have a sitdown with the ship and make sure it's ok
