Significantly the potential reasons stated for the hit and run are weather conditions (although they don't specify wind I'm not sure what else it might be, visibility maybe?) and electronics trouble aboard the ship.

Also, they didn't stop, because stopping a ship that big in a canal like that is an emergency in itself.
