I know from your posts that you yourself have experience with other languages and cultures, but generally when I see people online talking like that it’s because they haven’t seen it. It's just as common in chinese, as anyone who's put on a jiake to go to maidanglao to get a hanbao can confirm.

The fact that you do have that experience made that take even weirder to me because I would have figured you would have run into non English/American versions of it. i guess i'm thinking of it more like, hawaii has a lot of native speakers of other languages who continue to use their native language. we get SOME loanwords that are... creolized, they aren't anglicized they're usually more rooted in hawaiian phonemes, but we also get a lot of words that aren't really loaned as such they're just the words prounounced as their speakers say them because we all grow up with a global selection of phonetics. in japan you'll get like, french words and poo poo, and they'll... do their best to pronounce them like the french do , but especially in america you get a tendency to drop the origin entirely and just make up a new word for the thing, while criticizing anyone who uses the original term. i don't see that in other cultures, but maybe i'm just not looking hard enough.

I don't know whether to continue the textile tangent or the language one. One of my biggest beefs with the English language is how we simply transplant works into the language and keep the phonetics of the origin word, even thought the Romanized spelling doesn't even closely resemble the pronunciation. We even use it as an insult for intelligence. "I liyk to eet karrits" God forbid should an alphabet should give a hint to its pronunciation, instead of a direction to a system of rules that varies with the borrowed language.

ninjoatse.cx posted:I don't know whether to continue the textile tangent or the language one. Well, actually the problem is that the English language started to get standardized in the the 14th century when bureaucrats in England made what was called 'chancery standard' English, which was to be used by government scribes so that it was intelligible to everyone. Then the printing press came over, and merchants making books had to start choosing which accents and words to use when making books and such. And in the middle of this standardization of spelling was the Great Vowel Shift, which was this several century long process that shifted how vowels and such were pronounced. So written english was settling on one uniform standard that decoupled it from local accents for bureaucratic and literary purposes while the way english words were being pronounced was completely changing. William Caxton, the man who brought the printing press to England actually complained about this ongoing vowel shift in one of his books. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Caxton quote:In the 1490 edition of Caxton's translation of the prologue to Virgil's Aeneid, called by him Eneydos,[25] Caxton refers to the problems of finding a standardised English.[26] Caxton recounts what took place when a boat sailing from London to Zeeland was becalmed, and landed on the Kent side of the Thames.[25] A mercer called Sheffield who was from the north of England went into a house and asked the "good wyf" if he could buy some "egges". She replied that she could speak no French. This annoyed him, as he could also not speak French. A bystander suggested that Sheffield was asking for "eyren" and the woman said she understood that.[25] After recounting the interaction, Caxton wrote: "Loo what ſholde a man in thyſe dayes now wryte egges or eyren/ certaynly it is harde to playſe euery man/ by cauſe of dyuerſite ⁊ chaũge of langage" ("Lo, what should a man in these days now write: egges or eyren? Certainly it is hard to please every man because of diversity and change of language.")[27]

Dandywalken posted:Soviet ghosts tried to warn us that the US was lynching negroes!!!!!! You ARE lynching negroes is a much more powerful statement than you WERE lynching negroes. It's just... odd. Slaves picking cotton in the south is one of the most powerful images America has about past injustice. Prison labor and the criminalization of poverty are where that sort of thing lives now, but the klan hood and cotton are among the biggest "things used to be terrible" images we've got. This is stuff is tying a historic injustice to an ongoing injustice, and I have no goddamn idea what they're thinking. What they're trying to say is that the Uyghurs aren't experiencing any hardship or discrimination, unlike what happened to black people in the past, but that's a strange point because the western understanding of American slavery is as an example of progress(there was a speech during the vote counting in 2020 that ended with "we used to pick cotton, now we pick presidents") and the moral necessity of confronting your own problems. Sending that imagery out is tying the circumstances of the Uyghurs to the circumstances of slaves, and we fought a god drat war, against ourselves, to get rid of slavery. It's trying to poke at a sore spot in American history, but since it's using outdated images, it's instead reminding us about one of the few times the US was completely, totally, unequivocally on the right side of a conflict. Yeah they were trying to pick a sore spot in US history in the hopes that it would provoke a similar reaction in the US as it does in China but the difference is that the grand champions of whacking at America's sore spots are the Americans themselves

CCP trolls are just hilarious to me because it's pure amateur hour watching them work. The big thing about trolling, especially if you are an international actor, is to not make it so goddamned obvious what you are doing. Even the Russian Facebook trolls in 2016 knew to cover themselves up before getting to work. The CCP people just practically march in and advertise that they are now trolling you before they do it. I find myself laughing and going "so?" when they do it.
