Around which issues/story does it get bad? I read the series pretty far and eventually gave up.

And I'm not gonna say what that is but I'm sure anyone who's read it knows exactly what I'm talking about.

People make way too big a deal of it, but even if it did cause you to stop, it's issue #111 out of #144. I think it's good all the way through.

I really didn't care much for the trailer and I had a really bad hunch that this was going to be absolute crap. But its solid. The animation kicks it up at certain points in the fights and Omni-Man is just as scary as he should be. Really liked the way they did "Earth is not yours to conquer"

Yeah I noticed that too. Given the nature and intensivity of animation work, on long anime series you'll have a string of episodes that look bleh but then in a major fight the quality gets insanely good. There's actually a term for it I can't recall. Not that the non-action animation in Invisible is bad necessarily, but they do kick it up for the big fights. I'm trying to figure out what the style reminds me of though. One thing that gives me pause is that this show's cast is almost a little too stacked for an animated show. Like Mahershala Ali as Titan? Steven Yeun has a good shot at an Oscar this year, which would make him the third winner to have a role on this show. They booked all this before COVID right, I'd almost say that it was just that a bunch of A- and B- list actors had some time to kill during quarantine. Amazon must be spreading money on it.

The thing with "what if superman was evil?" and "isn't superman actually an alien overlord who took over planet earth?" is that Superman already did those plots and explored those themes. it's not really new, and really not that dark and bleak. I dunno, I guess I'll continue watching this show but I guess my point is that "what if superman was an insecure weirdo with mommy issues?" makes a better premise and that's why I prefer The Boys over this. But I'll watch it, of course I will.

It’s more about Mark. The Omni-man stuff is set up for what comes later but it’s not a story about evil super man. Anyway I think it’s probably smart that they varied up the races vs the comic. But knowing what happens with Amber later on I could see it generating some think pieces down the road. Ccs fucked around with this message at 23:52 on Mar 27, 2021 |

I never read the comic and I'm enjoying this show a lot. So far the ultra-violence has been put to pretty good dramatic effect, and I especially liked the alien invasion scene. It's such a cliche in comics and comic-based cartoons to see aliens rolling future-tanks and troops down a city street while laser beams fly and civilians flee, and they shot the scene exactly the way I've seen it a million times before. Except here instead of the lasers flying harmlessly overhead they're just mercing people left and right, in a way that's both casual and horrifying. Mark just completely freezing up in horror was believable and well executed. Also liked how Walton Goggins gave the whole incident the 9-11 treatment later, complaining about exactly how many civilian casualties there had been.

It seems like maybe after the second alien invasion downtown, you'd maybe think about evacuating the downtown core for like a week or something?

I read the comic way way back in the day and had forgotten most of it and for some reason when I was watching the show I kept hearing 'Atom Eve' as 'Adam Eve' which was real confusing. It doesn't help that they changed the logo on her chest from a female gender symbol superimposed with an atom design to a female gender symbol that is crossed out Plus I'm a huge idiot, that didn't help either.

I assume the regular one was too hard to animate? Or like they had to flip between a higher quality one and a zoomed out one so it was weird.

The best thing about this is the voice cast, everyone is so good in their roles, i love Jason Mantzoukas as Rex Splode, the perfect voice for such a smarmy rear end in a top hat. I get the feeling this is a real passion project to Steve Yuen, having a half Asian superhero out there front and center. My biggest issue with it is A) the animation is very generic, it looks a lot like the really forgettable DC animated movies that lack any distinct style, but the comic didn't really have anything special about its artwork either. It's serviceable to the plot but that's about it. and B) everyone is pretty much just another hero, maybe gender or aged swapped; Atom Eve is Invisible Woman, Rex is Boom Boom, Multi-Kate is Multiple Man, I choose to believe Robot is Robot Man due to their copper colouring and more Doom Patrol homages is good, and so on. Obviously having "Superman but this" isn't something unique to Invincible and it's also hard to think of new and unique powers, still it sorta makes me think of the Venture Bros superheroes but without the jokes. I mentioned this in the BSS thread and a Goon mentioned how it showed a deep and long history of superheroes, which yea I totally get that feeling from it, but still it can't help but feel derivative. Story is good enough to keep me interested and make those two issues not really problems. It is a Kirkman comic so I prepaired for it to meander and loose focus after an initial major story hook of Omni-Man killing the Guardians for some reason, was he doing it because he wanted to, was it because he was being controlled? Why did Robot let Kevin Michael Richardson out of his cell? . I am bracing myself for some "i know the world is about to end but i have high school drama to deal with!" kind of stuff as well.

I like the changes from the comic. Varying up the races is smart, costume adjustments are smart, style changes aren’t too drastic, it looks a lot like Cory Walkers early art with some of the Studio Mir/Legend of Korra influenced stylization. (I know they’re not the ones animating it but it has very visible influences and the animation supervisors in Korea might’ve worked on Avatar)

I have never read the comic but have seen the first 3 episodes. I have theories involving omni man's race invading earth and invincible having to choose between the homeworld of his people and his father and his home, eventually forcing him to overcome his own father and become is own man. But I'm kinda stupid so I'm probably wrong. Yeah, I heard Adam eve as well, eventually figured out it was supposed to be atom.

I guess they didn't last long enough for anyone to complain? First half of the first episode was dire. Very uninterested in the high school drama part of it but the rest is entertaining enough that I'll likely watch the rest of it. I'll probably wait until it's all out to watch it all at once, this doesn't really strike me as a show that's great as a weekly thing. Also originally I didn't know Invincible was a thing, so I heard about the show and thought it was gonna be about Imbattable. Not sure how they would've done it but it seems like it would be way more interesting. misguided rage fucked around with this message at 08:22 on Mar 29, 2021 |

Pastiches of the Justice League are incredibly common in works that aren't by DC. Even Marvel has them. In fact, Marvel had two such teams, one of which was invented just to be dispatched, like this team.

Yea, they had Sun God, the Rider, the Norn, i can't remember the rest. Hyperion is also Superman and his team is straight up the Justice League. But they're different enough that they don't seem like repainted originals, here they really feel like it. My only experiance with Invincible is that crossover where he met the Avengers and asked if Luke Cage's name was Black Man after being introduced to Spider-Man. I might as well just dig up the panel

If I heard the show correctly, this version of Wonder Woman is called War Woman. Which is basically perfect, as far as zero effort brand name knockoffs go.

Yeah they're super blatant knockoffs, except perhaps for Immortal. The city Darkwing lives in even has the red sky that Gotham had in the 90s Batman cartoon. Image likes clowning on the other comics companies. Later in the series heroes from Image's own greater library of heroes show up, like Savage Dragon and Brit. Btw Savage Dragon is a... weird comic. It's like if they took a typical superhero story and unlike in Invincible, where they went the violence route, they went the porn route instead.

Don't see the point of spending a whole lot of effort on characters whose purpose is fulfilled so quickly. You paint fast, in bright colors and big swatches, and let the cultural osmosis fill in the details since you haven't got a lot of time for them. It did bug me a bit that that scene wasn't as effortless as in the comic, but someone up thread pointed out the alternate reading of serving Nolan's alibi and he does just kind of wreck face as soon as he's decided he's had enough to make it look good. Little sad to not see "I never liked you."

Maybe they felt Dr.Strange was a superhero reference more people would know? I dunno. When I first heard "Seance Dog" I was like "That's a weird way to pronounce Science". My reason for peacing out on Invincible was super petty. I hated how they bolded certain words so the reader couldn't put their own emphasis on what they wanted to in the sentence while reading. After a certain point I found it so aggravating that I couldn't be bothered to read another issue.
