Reminds me of a fun blogpost from the Dusk developer last year, going over all the things that Quake e1m1 was built to demonstrate. Not sure it's been posted in this thread before: https://duskdev.wordpress.com/2020/01/08/why-quakes-e1m1-is-cool/

I was real hot on Ion Maiden in early access and probably spent more time playing the short EA episode than I spent on the full game. The only criticism I had at that time was with the weapon variety/utility and some of their functions. Not only did VoidPoint not add a single additional weapon in the full game (other than the redundant clusterpuck and chaingun that was only teased at the end), they made some of the existing guns worse. Just about every change made to the arsenal between then and release was garbage. Hey I made a list
  • The loverboy's autoaim secondary undercut the value of the primary fire and was entirely necessitated by the stupid number of tiny, fast moving enemies.
  • The flame bullets in the SMG were ugly and pointless and only made it less satisfying to use.
  • Making the shotgun and grenade launcher the same weapon meant it was slower to switch between the two due to the reload animation than it was to switch to something else as an intermediary first, then to the shotgun/grenade.
  • The changes to the bowling bomb meant it couldn't be thrown & detonated without homing or timed delay, turning it from a fun grenade weapon that could be used on the fly into a weapon with excessive preparation time that needed to be charged/cooked and slowed the pace of combat--and for some reason undetonated bombs couldn't be targeted with the loverboy's autoaim, which would have made detonating the bombs with a bullet actually fun and useful and viable.

Very Titanfall/Apex Legend in the slide shotty combo. Still blows my mind that it’s a gzdoom game and not unity or the like.

sort of reminds me of that doom mod called 'Project MDX' or something that had really punchy, fast gameplay like that. it looks really cool and i want to play it.

It's MSX, and yeah, I'd been thinking same thing. The visual styling is also similar.

I don't think you can change the effects but you can change sprites so someone could go through and overwrite all the fire stuff with normal stuff maybe?

Considering how Romero is about keeping sentimental stuff and holding on to notebooks from when he was a kid, I am not surprised at all he would be able to kindly remind Sandy of his inaccuracies. It’s actually pretty impressive how well he has kept the history. He’s one of the few figures to also admit his own flaws over the years.

I don't know about that, but he's pretty good at keeping records and old dev materials and hasn't been shy about citing sources and crediting other people for things when correcting the historical record in the past. In comparison, Sandy basically just has his word based on recollections of things that happened 27-odd years ago.

Doom was John Romero's high point while it was just a footnote in Sandy Petersen's life - he's far more widely known for the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG - so I'm definitely not surprised that Romero has a far better recollection of it.

Not a slam against Romero, he's an awesome guy and was far more of a key player in it than Petersen was. It's just... he hasn't been able to really top Doom since.

Oops, I posted this in the Games chat thread since someone posted the tweets there too, but I meant to post it here.

Romero's claim about E3M6 seems dubious since Tom Hall is not documented as having contributed to E3M6 at all (not to mention it doesn't match his style), and his levels are all present in various forms in the alphas. :raise:

You're right. I don't know what I was thinking; the Ion Storm penthouse was in a taller building than id Software so that was Romero's high point :hmmyes:

I'm replaying the Shadow Warrior reboot, and I'm enjoying myself most of the time, but the thing that really kills my buzz is when they throw multiple, massively bullet-spongey minibosses at you that make fighting with the katana a dicey proposition. Like the moment any of them show up even on their own all the fun gets sucked out of the room. They take way too long to kill, and I even have both of the skills that make you do extra damage to them. The game's at its best when it sends lots of smaller enemies at once and you have a good opportunity to mix up melee and ranged combat but ye gods are those greater demons way too much of a pain for what they're supposed to be.

Yeah the Shamans in particular can be downright painful to fight at higher difficulties, between summoning endless waves of enemies and conjuring those bubbles that make them invulnerable.

Try using the crossbow that can be charged on them. It still sucks that you have to drop everything and focus on them until they're dead before you can resume having fun, but with the crossbow I could at least deal with them in what felt like more reasonable amount of time compared to any other method.

Most publishers try to get away with using only 1 Switch cart because, like the N64, they are expensive which why it seem that the Switch has more digital distribution games. Also, some games are part on the cart and part download to get around multiple carts ie Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. Wolfenstein: Youngblood is just a case with a download code.

Listen to Rocket, I was incorrect. My head was someplace else my rear end when recalling
