Speaking of the valve economy poo poo, Idle thumbs, one of the best game podcasts to ever exist, read a bunch of my emails about the tfw, dota, and csgo economies. The poo poo I experienced alone was insane, and that pales in comparison to the rampant fraud, theft, scamming and pure callousness and cruelty that occurred during my time trading. I eventually had a nervous breakdown because of just how loving evil some people could be when it came to that poo poo, and seeing more and more people I knew and associated with get exposed for sharking (tricking often literal children into trading an extremely valuable item they might have found for a handful of proverbial beans), eventually I was like "gently caress ALL of this" and got out of that poo poo entirely.

If you've not seen or heard much of the whole valve economy poo poo, you may find it amusing or at least fascinating, even if it's a bit out of date now.

What's with the eh... bretonnian dance, sir?

Somehow even the deepest I got into the lovely TF2 trading "community" I think the worst I ever did was get a Bill's Hat off a guy for a yellow painted Reggaelator when it was a pretty new hat, the guy seemed to know he was 'trading down' or whatever too, he just wanted some good rear end braids for Demoman, so I can't even say I feel that bad about it.

how that relates to gita? well, I'm guessing it's some transitive property, "she is friends with the bad person" boilover.

yeah, way back when, i hustled during the summer when i was 18 and traded tf2 hats like crazy. at one point i was shooting the poo poo with someone else who did the same thing and we were trading tips. he told me a great way to make money was to run the inventory checking tool on people with low hours in tf2 and try to buy unusual hats from them for dirt cheap

I still help folks when I can but I don't do it as an entire secondary job like I used to. I'm super out of touch with what's worth a drat these days, but it's more that the nervous breakdown was just seeing people I thought as online friends being exposed as manipulative, greedy bastards over and over and over again. Like chat logs that are just straight up lying to people to convince them to trade a thing worth hundreds/thousands for a regular weapon (worthless) or some poo poo. I vividly remember joining a trade server where the owner(very much not a friend, think his name was jiggly or something), who clearly sounded at least 50 and audibly morbidly obese, coaxed literal children in the voice chat on the server into giving him stuff for nothing, or "server perks". Basically came across like a child kidnapper with the way he spoke to what were clearly for real young kids, it was real real bad and I can only imagine one of many such examples

Yeah when I was helping be a community admin for a now-defunct trading site, I once had a young kid, probably 10 or so, come to me to ask to help him get his hat back. He had unboxed a 1500 dollar hat and posted a youtube video of him unboxing it and everything, and someone had immediately added him using one of those sites and tricked him into trading it for a regular 10 cent hat. We got in a group chat with the guy who sharked him(since item history can be traced) and the dude just proceeded to mock the kid for being a stupid gullible idiot sucker child etc. Not an isolated incident by any means either. Just horrible bastards like that really did some psyche damage to me and I got the gently caress out of that poo poo.

Hell we've had some terrible goons post about getting stuff for nothing, there has absolutely been posts during the heyday of that poo poo on this site that amounted to "there's no rule saying I cant/I'm not breaking the law" which if this poo poo was regulated, like it should be, the stuff they were doing would absolutely be fraud.

I'm of two minds on TFWiki sometimes because on the one hand I might want to look up an accurate and serious summary of things that happen in various incarnations of Transformers. But on the other hand, it's Transfromers and TFWiki treats it with the weight it deserves.

It seems to me as though Gita Jackson gets put in a completely unwinnable situation. I mean, I'm sure she had tons of people asking her for some kind of comment about this. So you comment, because to not comment may as well be to say that you think the person involved deserves it, but then no matter how carefully you word it you just get piled on anyway.

Even though beyond working/having worked at Kotaku she has basically no connection to the situation and no power to change it.

Catgirl Al Capone
Dec 15, 2007

Long story short is that Gita was explaining why the situation is what it is and why otherwise principled journalists would form up in a defensive line over an article that causes harm to its subject because of a catch-22, and people mistook that for endorsement of the decision rather than explanation of what is going into it.

Honestly, that entire site was the bane of my existence as a game store wage slave. For all the informal information, there's also a tone of just straight up made up poo poo swimming around there. imo (i read up on the gita/nathalie stuff just now) gita saying that "the specific article sucks and should be taken down" and "editing articles is much harder than it looks and here's why" are both good things to talk about separately, but putting those together in a very long thread means that it's just kind of confusing and subtweety about the specific, v serious details

personally it would have been better to just go "yeah the article in particular sucks and should be removed" only (instead of putting it near the bottom of the long thread) and then talk about the general process of editing articles in a few months, but i guess u can't put that genie back? the whole thing kinda sucks tho cause there's a ton of harassment and abuse flying around at everyone :(
