I mean, it's unfortunately a harsh truth that sometimes a creator can have really revolutionary or influential ideas in one field while being just a huge, terrible dingus in others. I think that a lot of the concepts introduced or popularized in Crane's work have influenced RPG design for the better...But that doesn't change the fact that he's a stupid poo poo head I don't want to give my money to.

As a sideline (And this might be better suited to another thread): What are some alternate systems to Torchbearer? I know that Free League's Forbidden Lands brushes up against some of the same resource-management focused ideas as TB, but I haven't played it myself so I don't know how it compares.

It depends what you like about Torchbearer, I think. The aesthetic? The resource management gameplay loop? I haven't played Torchbearer but I have played Mouse Guard and took a long look at Torchbearer 1e.

If you like resource based exploring and a fantasy skin, the translated Japanese game Ryuutama offers that. It is not as easy as you might think based on the art. It's also very focused on journeys and gathering stuff, not so much on combat. You can find the website here: http://kotohi.com/ryuutama/

If you are also into scarcity and resource management, and the idea of adventurers who are only doing this until they can get enough cash to retire, there's Red Markets. The default setting is post-apocalyptic zombies; I realize that many people are tired of that setting. But the core game play is very solid and could be easily adapted to other settings. I'm planning to use it for a sci-fi survival game in the near future, for instance.
Website here: http://redmarketsrpg.com/
If you're just interested in looking at the rules, I think there's a quick start on Drivethrurpg.

Red Markets does also take a rather different tack with "zombie apocalypse" from standard. (Have an F&F running, setting section is already covered.) It would handle porting to anything the carrion economy could cover, so a lot of apocalypse and mercenary type material.
Just keep the very high lethality in mind.

If what you like about Torchbearer is the rules for logistics and/or skills and/or combat, but with less convoluted mechanics than their AD&D/D&D Basic equivalent, there are different games that do that. But I can't recommend any specific game if you're looking for Torchbearer with the serial numbers filed off. I recommend asking in the Old-School thread.

Miserable Secrets is wonderful, and I'll also highly recommend Cavaliers of Mars as my absolute favorite Sword & Planet setting ever. The elevator pitch is: "If Mars has canals, Mars must also have Venice."

Oh, I forgot Cavaliers of Mars but it's great, too. It manages to be both high adventure and somber because the planet's kind of dying.

eh. I mean, if there are actually other instances of him doing it in his sold work people would've found it by now. The internet loves a plagiarism treasure hunt and most of these "oops I stole one thing" turns into "oh actually they stole everything" within a week. This hasn't, yet.
