more falafel please posted:That's what a ++starter at a premium position with above average defense goes for. If you want to make sure he's going to play for your team for a long time, you have to pay him I am extremely happy that there's no opt outs. I understand why players want them, it's basically all upside and they should get every last penny they can. But as a fan I like knowing there won't be any need for more contract negotiations, and that they're going to be with the club a long time. Ogmius815 posted:It's basically the same as the Mets offer accounting for the deferrals. I think Lindor actually lost $40m in NPV from the Mets offer. The Mets 10/$325m offer was said to contain no deferrals. If the original deal was a flat $32.5m/year, with a 5% discount rate that's a Net Present Value of ~$250m. This deal is 10/$341m, with a $21m signing bonus and a flat $32m/year - which is really $27m a year since $5m/year is deferred at apparently zero interest. That $50m deferred is to be paid at from 2032-3041. Running that through the same NPV calculator as the original offer has that total coming to ~$210m. I'm not a math person and there's value in having a steady income past your playing days, but, uh. e: is there a prediction thread going around or should I make one?

chilihead posted:That's not what i'm saying, but hey let's enjoy baseball. Go braves! The problem with your analysis is that no one is ever paid according to their value to the bottom line. If they were, most people would make much, much more money than they do. Compensation is determined by what the market will bear. And in the case of professional athletes, the market would bear much higher prices for their services (especially for young players) but for a CBA that intentionally favors veterans, negotiated by a union run by veterans in accord with owners eager to drive down prices.

chilihead posted:Baseball stars are ridiculously overpaid but this has always been a touchy subject on this forum. Yes they should all be getting real money when they are young and producing. However that doesn't mean they should be grossly overpaid later on. One or two stars cannot effect a baseball game like in basketball. See, Mike Trout. I think most of the extensions are the fair amount for players. The ones signed buying out their arbitration. Also baseball revenue is all over the place, depending on the team. The owners are comically overpaid.

Unlimited substitution doesn't belong in baseball. Catchers are defensive specialists who are usually slow as hell, why don't we have a designated runner for them?

Designated Runner for catchers now. There's no reason not to do it. It's boring watching catchers try to run to first. It also opens another spot on the roster so the MLBPA should be on board.
