who are they talking about then

like, the Dem's most vocal critics online were a few months ago angry that M4A didn't get a floor vote, and today are angry about conditions at the border. Neither of those are particularly utopian outcries.

The EU has relatively free movement across borders without an abolition of borders entirely. Historically US borders ended where armed forces stopped settlers from entering, so there wasn't much to stop people from coming in. I think trying to control people entering began with the Chinese exclusion act.

The calls for abolishing police and borders does point the very broad horizon of abolishing the state. The abolition of the state is honestly a broadly popular demand in the US because neoliberalism has convinced people that it's impossible for the state to do anything that makes people's lives better.

I've never been a fan of the notion of a political elite class. I think it tends to stereotype People without getting to the nuance of what they're all about.

For example, the Times article leads with Cuomo. Despite whatever you want to say about his personal conduct, there is a clear difference to me between him and a Josh Holloway in terms of political agenda and how that drives his accomplishments. And that is very important.

Plus, the notion of elites is tied too much to the Republican buzzword use to paint all educated liberals as elites. This encourages many Republicans to be proud of ignorance, and to despise expertise. Education is something that everyone should want to strive for.

Liberals don't have an elite ruling class. We have leaders. Those leaders embody our values and work to promote and build upon them. And when they don't, we should reject them as leaders

I have been lurking dnd and cspam lately and every single day the thought "wow that's an unfair probe" runs through my head while reading dnd. It's really sick, tbh. These people aren't interested in any debate at all, it's a loving joke.

They've basically devolved into literally just considering "this person is trying to stir poo poo up" a valid reason for a probation. They've basically come up with a justification that can be used to just probate anyone they don't like. It's a twisting of the meaning of "trolling" to extent to "literally anything that the 'thread regulars' react negatively to."

It obviously looks completely insane to anyone who isn't already a part of their "community," but from their perspective anyone who comes into the forum with any sort of strong disagreement is just a troll who is trying to rile people up and "own their posting enemies."

This has always been an issue, but it's even worse now (likely because they now have a Democratic administration they want to defend). In the past there were generally some threads in D&D where you get get away with actual arguments (and the worst people kept to the Trump/USPol thread), but now it's spread throughout the entire subforum.

MooselanderII posted:

Why not just make D&D a closed off forum at this point? There's obviously no point in posting there if you disagree with anything about the Biden administration. I've never been a consistently active poster there or here, but I don't see what there is to discuss other than for being a Q&A about what's in Biden policy proposals.

This is probably dumb to mention, but why isn't there a QCS thread about this? I guess it doesn't really matter, because it's become much more of an echo chamber than it's ever been and so what's the point in posting there, but the modding of that thread really pisses me off.

You can disagree as long as you acknowledge that the person you disagree with (either the poster or politician) is a good person and their ideas aren't actually bad/harmful. So in the immigration thread if you advanced an argument like "I think it would be better if Biden did this, but Biden is doing his best" that would be acceptable, but it's unacceptable to actually argue that the Biden administration doesn't have good intentions.

The way they justify this in terms of forum rules/moderation is "you should always assume other people are acting in good faith." Of course, this is inconsistently applied (they don't require this standard for either Republicans or for anyone else they don't like, like Greenwald etc), but they consider the good intentions of the Democratic Party to be an obvious truth that only a cynical lunatic would doubt. Taken to its extreme, you end up with insane poo poo like the thing joepinetree mentioned with it being unacceptable to bring up the fact that all these same people called the same camps "concentration camps" prior to Biden's inauguration.

Compare and contrast where D&D was just a few years ago, when it had the "Democrats are a waste" thread that we used to post in consistently in the year or so after the 2016 election. It was easy to get probed back then, but at least there was some sense of passable "fairness" back then, JeffersonClay and Braniac_5 got banned, for example. It's breathtaking to see how far it has shifted since even then.

DnD becoming a hugbox that squashes dissent via the heavy hand of the probe, a liberal Free Republic, is sad. or was it always that way and I was just too libbrained to see it?

DnD was fine pre-trump, there was plenty of dissent, discourse frequently reached C-Spam levels of casual and we had a handful of openly conservative posters. But, after Trump made nazis feel comfortable going public, it made every conservative seem sinister and the rules of engagement for a lot of woke liberals at that point was to assume that every person who disagreed with you was a bad actor - mansplaining, sealioning, etc. You couldn't engage in a conversation anywhere with these loving people without somebody coming up with a word to explain why you shouldn't have posted at all.

I think the overlap with changes in the way tumblr and twitter's filters worked, expansions of block functionality in social media, etc, greatly exacerbated the problem. The primary ways people communicate online are not conducive to a debate anymore. When you have people who immerse themselves in an environment where every controversial opinion is filtered and every challenge to their ideas is blocked, they just seem to loving shut down when they're put on the spot, made to feel awkward, or get pissed off. There's no reading the previous posts anymore, there's no researching the issue or defending your point or just calling the other guy an rear end in a top hat and moving on. In the absence of a block button, angry poster hit report. Pretty soon, you get a situation where mods are probing people just because "we got a lot of reports" and not bothering to actually see what was going on.

edit: oh yeah and remember that time D&D was just probing people basically at random for not posting dogs on new pages? didn't that poo poo go on for like a loving month? it was like they couldn't decide if they wanted to be zany and fun GBS bullshit or a serious discussion forum
