If Illinois wants to remain competitive it's got to up it's corruption game. Not declaring money received from a foreign government is old man stuff. Gaetz used campaign funds to move an under aged girl across state lines for sex. If we're to remain competitive against Florida we need to start electing random guys from Xbox Live.

A billionaire governor doesn't need to stand up to an unpopular mayor no matter what state they're in. Pritzker just didn't want to sign it while CTU was still supporting Madigan. Edit: He didn't sign the Black Caucus Legislative Agenda bills until this week. He sure as poo poo wasn't going to sign a bill for the people who called Chris Welch a serial groper before that. I complained before about the awful choices for candidates in my local elections when I saw several were just republican vs "independent" (also a republican). But since it's election day I thought I'd google some candidates to find the least awful one, but at least one race is between a guy who retweets the Trump failsons, and a cop whose twitter bio is "Husband-Father of 5-Catholic-MAGA Republican-Patriot". The county republican group putting out an endorsement list has honestly been helpful in figuring out who not to vote for (they endorsed the cop).

Better than my town where the mayor race is between three flavors of ex-cop. And almost all the other positions are unopposed with no write-in.

Our local township came down to "Independents" who were life-long GOP until they got coup'd by a surprise in-person caucus in December by the full MAGA lunatics. Aside from one library board person I don't think there was a single candidate that I actually voted for rather than voting against the rest of the slate.

I get my second dose in two days also. My S/O gets theirs on May 1st, which will be a major relief for both of us. But the amount of people who are just being stupid and dangerous for no reason other than they want to is disturbing. I had to cut ties with someone completely the other day after they sent me a bunch of pictures doing stuff in public with no one wearing a mask. I remarked about it and got a "Oh you are one of those people." response. They knew that I am super high risk and haven't left my place almost at all in over a year. Their response was "Well just stay in your house forever then " I have discussed it with my S/O and others and we all kinda feel like a reason why people lack the empathy and concern over COVID is that no real big name died from it. You had a lot of well known people get it and recover fine so in the minds of the public it is a "well it isn't THAT bad" sorta mindset. Trump probably fueled that a lot too. If you think back to AIDS you really didn't get a turn around in the public until you had very famous people from all walks of life dying like Freddie Mercury, Anthony Perkins, Arthur Ashe, Robert Reed, Easy E and of course the campaigns by people like Ryan White and Magic Johnson.

When I was growing up in the AIDS epidemic we took it seriously because there was a nonstop unified message that you will die if you get it so never ever have sex. It was endorsed by the fundies because they loving love abstinence, and at that point it was a "gay man's disease" which also helped their narrative. The message with COVID for the first year was nonstop "NBD" and we're paying the price.

My suburban Chicago area district had a democrat running for every local position (there was one unopposed republican though). I didn't even know there was going to be an election until I saw some signs up near my polling place a few weeks ago. The turnaround time on a mail-in ballot was thankfully short, I asked for one like on the 30th and they sent it out like the day after that. The real hard thing with local elections is who to pick for like school boards and stuff. The one in our area had a lot of challengers, and as far as I can tell a lot of people just hated the current board, but I don't know enough about it to know if it's legitimate or not. That and like parks commissioner, there's 4 names and I'm supposed to pick 3. But they all just say "I want to serve the community in an open and inclusive way and make our parks beautiful for all or residents" or something similar. They don't say the quiet part loud so I have no idea who to vote for. I should probably just go to the local council meetings, or whatever they're called, and calmly demand full socialism now, more buses, and higher apartment buildings with more affordable rents.

Look around to see if there are county/city/township political orgs/parties with candidate endorsement lists. That can help sort through "non-partisan" races. Or search the candidates' facebook page. Could tell really quick who was a solid NO based on their photos of where they were on 1/6!

I want to point out if you're a vet of any age the VA will give you the vaccine. The Edward Hines VA has more than enough shots and can't give them away fast enough. I'm not sure if it applies to anyone here but figured I would bring it up just in case.

She is in higher ed so she became eligible finally. Once they open stuff up wide I hope at least that the people who have been waiting can get it quickly with increased supply. If you live in Chicago and have the option to travel I’d highly recommend doing so since you’ll have a MUCH easier time getting one and it opens spots for the people who don’t have the option to do so to get vaccinated.

If you check places like Walgreens obsessively you can get appointments. Basically they get a set amount of doses every day and want to use them up more than make sure everyone is perfectly eligible. The list of conditions for 1B+ is relatively broad so if you got any health concerns at all you don't have to lie. You may have to go for a bit of a drive though. I got my shots up in Rockford and I live in Wheaton.
