Yes some podcasts are fascist indoctrination machines but then again some of them talk about old NES games so it’s impossible to say if they are bad or not.

The only morally good podcasts are actual play podcasts. Unfortunately actual play podcasts are usually very boring, so that doesn't help.

My inlaws listen to these dipshit podcasts all the time. They're not like full fash or anything (and thankfully I don't really think they could be) but they still believe in some dumb RW things because of it. Like they're really into the "free speech on campus!" thing and despite being a student or employee of three different universities throughout my entire adult life so far I just can't loving convince them that they believe in a bogeyman made up by people who hardly even step foot in a post secondary institution. They even asked me about it twice to get some insight from me but just got incredulous when I told them it's not a thing. It's maddening.

Honestly there are lots of special interest podcasts with a smaller scope that can be really interesting. The problem is the biggest podcasts mostly started when podcasting was new, so they're like you said: two dweebs show up every week with a page of headlines from last week that they riff off of for an hour and a half. I guess people really were desperate for parasocial relationships and yelling callbacks to early episodes at live shows.

Can I be a manuscript? Not like one of those fancy illuminated ones, but like the various manuscript libels sold in coffee houses by dudes known only as "The Captain" and/or pasted to the statue in Charing Cross? You know, the ones where the author would put someone else's name on it because it would be funny if the Surveyor of the Press came after them because they wrote a poem about the king jacking off in a public park?

I'm whatever you call that form of communication where one person isn't directly sending a message to the other person but there's a third person who saw the first person like two weeks ago and mentions it to the second person when they run into each other at the local watering hole and somehow this system works just as well.

feedmyleg posted:I watch all my NES content on YouTube and never even thought of podcasts? Suggestions for anything that isn't just obnoxious dweebs making bad jokes? Retronauts. Jeremy Parish and Bob Mackey have been hosting the show with some changes now and then since 2006. It's hard to find their original episodes but they've really honed their craft when it comes to being informative and engaging gaming historians. It's one of two things I support through Patreon because I have gained a decade of enjoyment from their work. It's not just NES games though, "retro" is loosely defined as anything more than 10 years old and there are moments that will really make you feel your age, but I strongly recommend it. Jeremy Parish has a YouTube channel where he chronicles NES, SNES, Virtual Boy, GameBoy and now Sega Master System games which may also be your jam if you aren't already aware. I like his direct approach, there's very little production outside of gameplay footage and no asides for skits or bits. Just a strongly informative approach to a topic. There's also Hardcore Gaming 101's podcast, but I don't like it as much.

I've reached a point where "it's hosted by <two male anglo names>" automatically dumps a podcast straight in the nah pile.

Jeremy Parish's videos are great, and I love that his approach to this is to just go straight chronological through the library, because it means you get a much clearer image of what things were like. It's really easy to look back at the NES and think that it was nothing but a stream of either hits or famous disasters (and sometimes there are some big deals right next to each other, like Legend of Zelda and Metroid). But no; Castlevania wasn't rubbing elbows with the future kings, it was released sandwiched between bad ports of mediocre arcade games that nobody remembers.
