The latest This Machine Kills is good. The part where Ed talks about Index funds and how they treat poor countries: "You see this line here? Where it meets the other line? That is why 2 million people have to starve. It is out of my hands."

That really got to me. "It's beautiful".

what was the explanation? index funds just make purchases to replicate what other credit rating/market analyst firms have decided is a good benchmark to monitor the market. they make responsive rather than active decisions on what to invest in. good performance is dictated by how quickly they respond to changes in the index they're trying to match

That's cribbed from a viral tweet, but a good message to propagate regardless.

I know, he even says it's a meme. But it was just perfect in the way he explained it.

The point was that these index funds just create/dictate the market. There are no "market forces" it is just rigged from top to bottom.

index funds are the financial equivalent of peeking over somebody's shoulders and copying their work.

for example, Standard & Poor's runs the S&P 500 index. if vanguard or another company makes an S&P 500 index fund theyre just copying S&P's market data. which isnt so much a value judgment on what stocks are good investments, but a rundown of "we follow the largest 500 stocks on the exchanges by their market capitlization (price * number of shares) along with sector (energy, tech, communication services, etc.) weighting."

S&P definitely influences the market because their index is a widely used measuring stick but thats not the same as dictating it. getting on the S&P 500 like tesla did spurs excitement for investors for sure

i havent listened to it but if thats the lesson you got from the podcast it really doesnt sound like they know what theyre talking about

Anything that undermines faith in our economic system is good imo. Did you know the S&P actually stands for Souls and Persons and it goes up when the rich sacrifice poor people?

yeah i get it but its not like there arent valid criticims of the market that take a lot of effort to understand, especially if youre a podcaster and your job is basically "sound like a buddy who just learned something cool and wants to share it"

I think they know what they are talking about, I didn't even get into the details just that stuff is not "up to the market" as is told so many times.

A decent amount of Black people in heavily policed urban areas do think more or better police is the solution to crime. I don't have any immediate stats to pull from right now unfortunately. I'm not shocked when I hear it.

The answer for the "Left" is to engage with them, hear why they think that, and better argue our analysis that police are the armed enforcers for capitalists. Violence is a problem in lots of neighborhoods, and that needs to be addressed, but police aren't the solution.

Being obsessed with polls is dumb. Most people would probably say they are against a "dictatorship of the proletariat," so should socialists disown that as well?

On the other hand, the police shot a 16 year old kid five times and killed him about a block away from my place on Monday. This issue might be more complex then this podcast guy is making it out to be.
