He stopped flying when he retired as a coach. After that, if whatever network he was with had the Pro Bowl, he didn’t go and someone else filled in. For example, his last few years with NBC, Al Michaels would still do play-by-play, but they’d have Cris Collinsworth do color.

So my dad has started down this path hard the last couple of years. Like full blown crazy/conspiracy stuff. Everything with Covid and the election has just made it worse. My son thinks he is crazy to the point that he's almost told him in his face that. My brother doesn't want to go out anywhere with him just because of the crazy poo poo he says like he's being followed and everyone is out to get him. If a company vehicle passes him or if a vehicle has some words on it, that is code to him that they are telling him something. The phones are bugged etc etc.

He won't talk to anyone so medication isn't a possibility and it will be ok because Rapture is coming soon and all the wicked people will have to answer for it then. It's really sad because this changed happened within the last 5-10 years whereas when I was growing up he was a rock and someone I looked up to as inspiration. So it's been hard seeing this happen.

Sorry, my friend. That sucks. I totally feel you on your shifting perception of somebody you used to look up to. I had to deal with that a lot in my family :-/

LeeMajors posted:

This particular line hit hard. I realized just before our daughter was born that she and I can never really discuss anything of consequence because we are too different in basically all of our viewpoints and we don’t even agree on reality anymore.

Thankfully neither she or my dad have wandered into any social media conspiracy theory nonsense, and are still basically bog standard conservatives, but it’s disheartening to have so few shared points on reality that everything has to be superficial.

I hear you. Ironically, the realization that I can never be close to my mom (or most of my family) on any meaningful level was a huge motivating factor for me to have a kid of my own. I want to have a family that I love and connect with and I realized the only way that might happen is to start my own.

I'm going to try really loving hard to make sure my daughter never sees me the way I see my parents. Like...holy poo poo it cannot be that hard, right? If I keep evolving as a human being then I hopefully won't seem like some out of touch rear end in a top hat when she grows up.

I often wonder if the natural progression is to always end up in a place where parents are out of touch assholes and it scares the gently caress out of me. I’m going to do everything possible to avoid that—without the howdoyoudofellowkids thing of course.

I’d like to think millennials were hosed hard enough by the system and exposed to enough social progress and acceptance to break that cycle but I see plenty of folks in my peer group clinging to the same nonsensical conservative bullshit and it reminds me that no generation is immune.

I still love my parents and we have a functional relationship in a lot of ways but it is disorienting to not have that steady waypoint in your life and know you can’t really approach them about the things that matter.

Anyway, I definitely don’t want to overshadow a lot of the more serious trauma y’all have expressed here, but I’ve had a pretty solid taste of it and wanted to both sympathize and commiserate.

This is real and my greatest fear: being seen by my son the way I see my parents. I think it's possible because I know lots of folks with healthy relationships with their parents and generally cool parents. Somewhat related to your point about peers, it's why I've basically had no contact with anyone from high school post college. They've all wound up p conservative and largely stayed in the Houston suburbs and seem to have never really grown beyond that mindset.
