I’m lucky it’s just my aunt who went full crazy. She’ll call my grandma and rant for an hour about how the reason no one in my generation of the family has kids is because Democrats are teaching us to hate babies or something like that.

I often wonder if the natural progression is to always end up in a place where parents are out of touch assholes and it scares the gently caress out of me. I’m going to do everything possible to avoid that—without the howdoyoudofellowkids thing of course. I’d like to think millennials were hosed hard enough by the system and exposed to enough social progress and acceptance to break that cycle but I see plenty of folks in my peer group clinging to the same nonsensical conservative bullshit and it reminds me that no generation is immune. I still love my parents and we have a functional relationship in a lot of ways but it is disorienting to not have that steady waypoint in your life and know you can’t really approach them about the things that matter. Anyway, I definitely don’t want to overshadow a lot of the more serious trauma y’all have expressed here, but I’ve had a pretty solid taste of it and wanted to both sympathize and commiserate.

I think it's possible because I know lots of folks with healthy relationships with their parents and generally cool parents. Somewhat related to your point about peers, it's why I've basically had no contact with anyone from high school post college. You'll age and stay in touch perfectly fine if you are humble about your beliefs and remain willing to learn and grow. My parents are largely good at this and we have stayed close. You'll all do great as parents, just asking and thinking about these questions puts you all well ahead of the curve.

All this talk about unpleasant parents going insane the last couple years make me glad mine are dead. In unrelated news my new work computer was delivered home instead of my studio last night so that was an anxious way to end the day. Also realizing I need to get all new adapters to get my old-rear end peripherals like my Cintiq to work is great.

I guess we get our communist news from other sources but thinking that everyone else sits around watching cable news like they do screams "I am massively out of touch" E: like I'm 33 and my oldest friend here is 46/47, and the mental image of him just chilling at home marathoning MSNBC or something is just completely foreign to me. Mom has gotten super apathetic "both sides are poo poo" and wasn't even going to vote last election until my sister and brother got through to her with something along the lines of "this is what we want and we need you to vote for Biden so we can at least try and get there, do it for your kids and (potential) grandkids". My dad is a real dyed in the wool Conservative, all I ever remember him listening to in the car was Rush Limbaugh. Fortunately the extent of it for him is ragging on the Idiot Democrats. He doesn’t buy into Covid, QAnon, or election fraud conspiracies or anything like that, but he did back Trump fully and his only criticism was Trumps endless bullshit Tweeting. We mostly just talk about motorcycles and cars and racing and poo poo. He’s an attorney going on like 30 years and I’m a big dumb bumbling idiot who will gently caress up a debate if the other person is arguing that grass is blue and I have a power point in front of me plainly laying out why it is in fact green, so I absolutely do not even bother engaging in political discussion with him because I’ll just get wrecked no matter the argument lol. My sister fully bought into the Trump train bullshit and basically turned her personality and identity around 180 degrees to match it so I just ignore her as much as possible lol. At the end of the day, despite all the technology in the world, kids are still kids. My parents were able to have their grandkids over after a year without them because they're 2 weeks past vaccination (and my brother and his wife have been vaccinated since January). They bring the kids over and ask the youngest what he wants to do, and he says "I've got some shoveling I need to do." Dude loves farm equipment and apparently wants to shovel bark on my parent's yard lol

I can’t get over the cult of trump. I just can’t. It’s broken my brain that any person capable of functioning day to day can look at that man and take him seriously on anything. I wouldn’t trust him to run a loving hot dog stand. He’s a profoundly transparent, self-aggrandizing snake oil salesman and has been a laughing stock for more than four decades. It’d be hilarious if it weren’t so destructive and heartbreaking. seiferguy posted:At the end of the day, despite all the technology in the world, kids are still kids.
