There's a couple subway stations in Seoul where you can experience the uncanny valley looking at actual living humans. It's super weird.

Every left wing politics space I know of is gradually filling with more and more gibbering nutjobs. It's easy to just laugh at right wingers when they go down the insane conspiracy holes but worse when people you're at least nominally on the same political side as do exactly the same thing and are unable to recognize how nuts they sound. Also hard to totally blame people for looking at the state of the world and having their brains broken by it.

Ugly In The Morning posted:I thought the state department thing had to do with a ton of CIA people having official state department cover and apparently Tankies don’t know the difference. Yeah, the non-insane version is many (all?) embassies/consulates have intelligence officers (I don't think they're always CIA) working there under cover as diplomatic staff. Every country that has an intelligence service does that, everybody knows everyone else is doing it, it's just part of the international game. But the vast majority of the State Department or any other country's diplomatic corps has nothing to do with spying. The complete binary, all or nothing thinking is a big problem. You can actually be aware there are CIA operations that occur via State Department cover without believing the State Department is actually indistinguishable from the CIA and responsible for everything in the world that you, personally, disagree with.

I think it's just pure imitation of political commentators. Saying 'state department' rather than 'CIA' makes you sound more in the know (or it used to), because it suggests you actually know a bit about the structure of the civil service and aren't just raving about intelligence boogeymen.

I know people like this unironically in real life. Did you know that the Hong Kong democracy protests were paid for by the state department! There are literal RECORDS. Imagine the Chinese doing that here?! The presence of actual people at our work who have literally fled China after Tiananmen or because they took part in a democracy demonstration has absolutely no bearing on them.

Saying "state department" makes you sound informed, saying "CIA" makes you sound like a crackpot I'm pretty sure that's all there is to it. Maybe with an inkling of implied "deep state" dogwhistling since the state department is a bureaucracy, the mortal enemy of the shitheads of our time

Harry White in the Treasury department insisted on giving the Soviets the plates used to print German occupation currency in 1946. Which the Soviets immediately used to print billions of marks, hyper inflating the currency to oblivion and ultimately costing the USA and Britain hundreds of millions of dollars. He did this because he loved Molotov, and wanted to kiss him on the lips

Anyone have good sources for how the PRC has actually performed on Covid in the last year? Seeing folks talking up their response post-March 2020, but, knowing the CCP's relationship with the truth, I'm pretty drat skeptical. My uninformed guess would be that China has coupled extreme quarantine measures (likely with little thought to the wellbeing of affected communities) with rabid suppression of data or conversation that might contradict the rosy image (which might be detectable by looking at aberrations in total death count, assuming even that data is accurate). Not looking to defend the atrociously poor performance of many states in the West, just find something good to point out that "Hey, maybe this brutal authoritarian state isn't giving the world the full picture "

at this point japan is probably the only country with accurate covid numbers, a lot of western countries are kind of just shrugging at this point like "had vax so what" while their populations go unvaccinated. hell it costs $125 to get tested on oahu it isn't even a public service anymore. you think anyone is gonna get fuckin tested NOW?

If there was a credible source to show they were lying, it would be known about and blasted from every corner of the media. At this point while I wouldn't be surprised if there was undercounting of cases early on, they are clearly being extra paranoid about it now. The key problem will be how well the Sinovac vaccines work and how well it can open up for the Winter Olympics at the start of next year.

Yeah, they lied a lot at the beginning but it's been genuinely under control since last year with only minor outbreaks. The quarantining and testing is pretty heavy handed, you can't miss it when it does happen. All of my friends in Chengdu (and the entire population of the city) had to get tested when there were like five cases at Sichuan University. And they've avoided the it's MY RIGHTS to spread plague idiots, which helps. I'm sure the official numbers are downplaying it some but it's not like they're covering up a Brazil/US level outbreak or some poo poo. Anyway there's no need to be pro authoritarian given that Taiwan has handled it better than almost any other country. South Korea and Japan have also done well, even though Japan by East Asia standards hugely hosed it up and is continuing to do so. This got posted in the Eastern Europe thread and was a pretty good article with interviews of people who spent time in the camps (you will need to translate the page): https://novayagazeta.ru/articles/2020/04/16/84935-kitayskaya-peredelka Especially liking the part where the Kazakh dude got thrown in the concentration camps for, presumably, looking too Uighur. Pretty similar stuff to what you've seen from other survivors - beatings, torture, mass rape, etc.

Fur20 posted:in what ways has japan hosed it up? i'm not too familiar with how they're handling it internally. Well, at first they covered it up to try to prevent the Olympics getting cancelled. Since then they've just been doing incompetent restrictions that don't make sense, masking is spotty, testing was a problem for a while, Go To Travel was paying people to travel around the country internally and spread the disease, they're incredibly slow on vaccination, etc. The continued attempts to not cancel the Olympics are getting more and more farcical. Don't get me wrong, compared to how most western countries handled it Japan's done better, but compared to other Asian countries they've been huge idiots. They're really not trying at all. Don't worry though, they're about to get serious and suggest restaurants close one hour earlier to really fix the problem. This stuff just pops up in my Japan journalist twitter feeds but here's one to scroll through: https://twitter.com/jt_mag_os E: This article is a good zeitgeist. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2021/04/10/national/japan-coronavirus-emergency-measures/ "Quasi state of emergency will apply to only certain Tokyo wards. In some stations like Mitaka, this means restaurants in North Exit have to close at 8pm because the ward is under quasi SOE, but in South Exit can be open till 9 pm since ward is not under quasi SOE."
