That's because no one ever said "everyone knew there were no WMDs" is a strawman. People decided to give the OP the benefit of the doubt by interpreting it as hyperbole, but like with the Iraq War itself, that assumption of good faith was immediately smacked into the ground. It goes back to the root of the problem of people saying "who are you going to believe, the U.S. or a dictator whose sons feed dissidents to shredders feet-first" as if it were either-or, letting their faith in the U.S. government blind them to articles outright saying the evidence was based on the dubious word of informers like Chalabi alone, and how many of whom only pretended to be interested in the truth anyway.

I remember reading articles like https://www.theguardian.com/world/2002/mar/17/iraq.peterbeaumont at the time

This is old, but I was wondering last night who was the Democrat who ran against Marjorie Taylor Greene (since liberals won't shut the gently caress up about her), and found out it was this guy. Except not really, because he withdrew less than 60 days before the election, so she ran unopposed.

There's so many great quotes in this article that show the feckless mindset of Democrats like Kevin, who essentially refused to be passionate or campaign on actual issues.

quote:

There was a time when Kevin Van Ausdal had not yet been called a “loser” and “a disgrace” and hustled out of Georgia. He had not yet punched a wall, or been labeled a “communist,” or a person “who’d probably cry like a baby if you put a gun in his face.” He did not yet know who was going to be the Republican nominee for Congress in his conservative district in northwestern Georgia: the well-known local neurosurgeon, or the woman he knew vaguely as a person who had openly promoted conspiracies including something about a cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles.
rofl at Marjorie campaigning on "I bet if I threatened this guy's life, he'd cry."

quote:

So one day in March, he drove his Honda to the gold-domed state capitol in Atlanta, used his IRS refund to pay the $5,220 filing fee and became the only Democrat running for a House seat in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, which Donald Trump won by 27 points in the 2016 presidential election.
This fucker files in March on a whim, with just eight months before the election, in a district with 694,398 people. That is insanity, and even without COVID it'd be incredibly unlikely to pull off unless you're already famous, and even then it's a strong Republican district.

quote:

He came up with a slogan — “Save the American Dream” — and posted his first campaign ad, a one-minute slide show of snapshots with voters set to colonial fife-and-drum music.

He gave one of the first public interviews he had ever given in his life, about anything, on a YouTube show called Destiny, and when the host asked, “How do you appeal to these people while still holding onto what you believe in?” Kevin answered, “It’s all about common sense and reaching across the aisle. That’s what politics is supposed to be like.”

All of that was before August, when Republican primary voters chose the candidate with the history of promoting conspiracies, and President Trump in a tweet called her a “future Republican Star” and Kevin began learning more about Marjorie Taylor Greene, whose first major ad featured her roaring across a field in a Humvee, pulling out an AR-15 rifle and blasting targets labeled “open borders” and “socialism.”
fife and drum music versus insane AR-15 in a Humvee energy, surely the voters will pick the Revolutionary LARPer.

quote:

But as Greene gave a victory speech railing against the “hate-America left” and calling House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a “b----,” Kevin sensed an opening. He would counter her extremism with moderation. He would talk about jobs and health care. He would double down on civility. As he told Vinny soon after hiring him as campaign manager, “People say I’m a nice guy, and I am. I think that’s the best approach.”

. . .

“Okay,” Ruth interjected. “I love ‘fanning the flames of fear.’ But Kevin, I’m going to tell you something right now that’s really hard. This statement is about reaching people in the middle, and a lot of them are Republicans. For them, the language about love and peace is bad, or just not in their wheelhouse. … It’s got to be, ‘This has got to stop. I’m calling this out.’ ”

“Okay,” Kevin said.

“Try that ‘Enough is enough’ line,” Ruth said.

“Enough is enough — wait,” Kevin said, then tried again. “Enough is enough.”

“Oh, I love that,” Ruth said.

“I’m not going to act like this is a normal election,” he continued.

“Oh, that’s really good,” Ruth said.

“Enough is enough” Kevin repeated over and over, practicing the statement his team wanted to post as soon as possible to his 1,500 Facebook followers, and meanwhile, Greene had posted a new Facebook video for her 100,000 followers.

. . .
“There’s psychology but I don’t have time to explain,” Ruth said. “Okay, go for it.”

“Hi, I’m Kevin Van Ausdal,” he began, and this time the camera was on and recording a man who appeared increasingly uncomfortable
as he tried to hammer the singsong tone out of his voice and say words like “violence” and “civil war” while trying not to think about Greene’s armed supporters.

. . .
“Hi. I’m Kevin Van Ausdal,” he said through his mask into the window of a car, his tone reverting back to the Kevin of the drum-and-fife video. “I want to be your next congressman. I’m running against Marjorie Taylor Greene?”

“Well, we’re going to need you,” said the man inside. “We don’t need those radicals.”

“Hi, I’m Kevin …” he said through the window of the next car.

“Kevin Van Ausdal. That’s you?” said the woman inside. “I don’t even have to tell you how important this election is. What are you planning to do?”

“Well, we need opportunities in this country. I’m working to address health care, and green jobs …” he said, trying for a moment to be the candidate he wanted to be.
There is line after line in this of them wasting their time, and giving money to self-professed political experts and consultants who do nothing. The campaign apparently hires two campaign managers, a consulting firm, and a personal assistant for Kevin, but the article doesn't once talk about how he campaigned (did he knock doors? did he phone bank? did he talk to voters ever????) or what his platform was besides "civility". They talk extensively about coaching Kevin to speak more forcefully, but never talk about who is watching these videos, or how to expand their audience.

Then his wife divorces him in late Summer, and kicks him out of their home, forcing him to move in with his parents in Indiana, effectively disqualifying him. Except Marjorie Taylor Greene also didn't really live in the district, and Kevin apparently had zero friends or volunteers willing to help him out during this time.

tl;dr The Democrats run like absolute morons. Even when you take them in good faith, they are largely anti-social sadsacks and losers, who do not understand this political moment, or really any political moment, and have zero ideas.

The entire mindset to them is elections are a job interview where some divine power looks at their resume and says "you are elected!" The entire concept of running a campaign based on appealing to the public is absolutely alien since they are supposed to be rewarded for their careers and schooling.

Also that refugee article makes me think of the endless parade of smiling masks on tv saying Biden truly understood empathy and makes me real mad.

They fundamentally don't understand that elections are shallow popularity contests. I don't even think Kevin Van Ausal was being malicious, I think he genuinely is ignorant of politics. Kevin apparently had the money to hire multiple administrative staff, but didn't have the money to do anything to counter the insane appeal of Marjorie's Ball Fondlers ad, or hire people to knock doors.

if you don't volunteer to be an SS guard, they'll just find someone crueler

also you have to tow the line and be as cruel as we say or we'll find someone willing to put in extra cruelty and encourage them with praise and promotions while having the plausible deniability we never told them to do that

also if you think that this is rotting your soul and you yourself are becoming crueler, it's not you that's changing, it's that the latest arrivals are more disrespectful

also anything you have to sign an NDA, for the immigrants' privacy

but you can change the system from within if you believe :)

It's the Hillary Clinton stuff all over again where she was "the most qualified candidate ever" when her electoral experience was one re-election as a Democrat in New York after getting into a Senate seat because her opponent imploded on his own and being the state department head. The presidency is nothing more than just a prestige job to cap off your memoirs and actually helping the people of this country let alone NOT brutalizing the people outside of it doesn't even factor into consideration outside of corporate style motivational tweets.
