Being able to be compensated by private interests after leaving office is basically an unavoidable conflict of interest, since politicians will always have in mind the fact that if, for example, they oppose the interests of X Industry, they're unlikely to receive a good job (or other benefits) from that industry after leaving office. Like you mention, it's fine to give them a really huge pension or whatever in exchange (though ideally we wouldn't elect any politicians who are put off by the idea of "only" being able to earn $200k/year after leaving office).
