It never made much of a splash but Hard West was an xcom-style tactics game set in the weird west and it slapped. As well as equipment, you could equip a hand of up to five playing cards. Each had their own effect, but if you made a specific poker hand with them they gave you an extra bonus.

The health mechanics were really cool as well. You had your actual hp, and then Luck, which was akin to a shield. Getting "hit" would deplete luck, and when you ran out you took HP damage and got a refresh of Luck. Hp damage was pretty serious and hard to heal.

I love that Monster Hunter World depicts a monster being poisoned by having it froth purple at the mouth. It's the perfect level of visible: not overpowering and distracting or taking away from the design, but exactly noticeable enough for you to see it and take pride in it.

In subnautica you sometimes find creature eggs on the seafloor and can put them in a fishtank to hatch them. what the egg will actually turn into is not revealed until you've hatched that kind of egg before. you may find that you actually just hatched quite a monstrosity! if you don't want them, to get them out of the tank you just pick them up as inventory items.

Problem: if you let them go outside your base, they suddenly pop out of your inventory at 10x the size and can start loving poo poo up

Solution: You can build a trashcan that deletes anything you put in it. therefore the actual clean way to get rid of a monstrosity you accidentally raised is to pick it up and put it in the trash.

I've started playing Aeternoblade 2 (as I was looking for Mario+Bowsers Fury and it was sold out but this caught my eye) and while the voice acting is really bad the overall design of the game is still pretty good. It has solid gimmicks and pretty nice backgrounds, and a neat interspersal of 2d level design with the occasional 3d room or encounter. I also like that some rooms make the character's path "curve" so in effect many of the 2D maps connect into a more 3D environment. Also combat is pretty fun despite basic hits not feeling very strong, as there are plenty of mechanics and interesting enemy types that are often mixed around, sometimes with puzzle elements too. There is a lot of exploration and optional paths to find items, and each save point has a secret room that you can complete to get extra items to strengthen your characters, if you have the right time power to activate them (there are a lot of rooms where I'd need to be using a different person to get through, I just haven't had the chance to do so yet).

The bosses are also quite engaging, you can recover after initially doing really poorly if you figure out their attacks and how to dodge them.

Mostly let's plays, my next project will be finishing Tearaway Unfolded because I started that a while ago but put it on the back burner to finish my Bolt let's play and a let's read/audiobook type thing I did of a book based on Disney's Sleeping Beauty. I also do the occasional one off to show off games that I want to show off as I'm playing them, but I don't do blind runs fully because I want to make sure I can beat the game before I dedicate myself to lping it. The one offs are for games where I'm like "I may not be able to beat this game entirely, but I want to show it to my friends to let them see what it's like"

i'm thinking of doing another Audiobook thing, the next one would be Krindlekrax, a children's book I'm quite fond of, but I want to figure out how to do it justice because some characters in that book can be a bit much and I want to play them in the least annoying way possible. They often have gimmicks that are kind of one-note, but in at least one case I've figured out how to sell it because for that particular thing it actually builds to something. The character in question is the main character's father, who has the catchphrase "Not my fault". It starts off annoying, but when you know why he says it you figure out how it is meant to be read - it's a nervous tic/dissociative episode, because in his past he did something incredibly stupid, so a massive underlying problem that the neighbourhood is facing is ENTIRELY his fault.

I haven't updated much in the last few months because of life getting in the way but when things settle down I'll get back to it.

I think my favorite single location/collectibles quest in Horizon Zero Dawn is at the Yellowstone Visitors Center in the DLC. You run into a self-proclaimed animal researcher who is interested in animal figurines that unlock a hologram and brief scientific presentation of various now-extinct animals, brought to life by "Montana Recreations" who surely must have been one of the greatest scholars of the old world :v:

I'm actually playing Tearaway Unfolded right now and I had no idea it would make use of the camera. I've had it hooked up all this time for the PSVR and didn't even notice the red light until it started feeding live video into the world.

Also add it to the very short list of games that use the DS4 trackpad for something more than "extra large menu button"

I've been playing Thief a bit, (The Dark Project/Gold, not the more recent remake.) and I really like how the game handles difficulty levels.
Unlike a lot of games where difficulty mostly just nerfs/buffs the player and enemies, changing the difficulty doesn't change enemy strength, your hp, anything like that.
It changes the amount of starting equipment you have, the amount and placement of enemies + moves around elements on the map. And also it adds additional side objectives you have to complete, or extends existing ones.

Like in the second mission where you're infiltrating a prison, on normal you only need to break someone out and the mission ends when you do, but on hard you need to escort them out as well.
I just find it really neat. The same mission on different difficulty levels can be pretty different, it's not 3 carbon copies but with tougher enemies etc.

Also it rewards exploration very nicely, and there are a ton of secrets to find and nab. Plus I quite like the setting of 'encroaching industrial age causing upheaval and friction with the established supernatural.'.
It's nice revisiting it, since it's like 20 years since I played it last. It's weird how much of it I still remember, despite it being so long ago.
