TLJ will forever be a perfect storm forever since it is simultaneously excellent and deeply flawed, but people can only pick one side.

Not to call anyone out but "TLJ is about a low-speed space chase" thing is such a lame argument IMO, it's entirely concerned with the aesthetic trappings of the least involved portion of the plot. Might as well yell about how Fury Road is about driving somewhere then turning around and driving back. It's just not important.

Only Happy When It Rains
Fair enough, but I would argue the chase in Fury Road at least made sense and was exciting.
But again thats just my experience.

I can see why some people like the movie.
I mean I despise Mauler but I like Jenny Nicholson and others who have praised TLJ, the mind is a weird thing.
I just didn't find it enjoyable myself outside of some parts (which also look a lot better now in hindsight). And admittedly I've been on this dislike slope ever since TFA anyway.

edit: I also perfectly understand the people who like the movie are so very tired of getting attacked by those who dont.

I think Mauler's video on Last Jedi spends an hour on the logistics of the opening battle. Feel bad the guy has a brain that awful.

It's fine.
Don't worry about it.
The whole "Well, we didn't accomplish much (besides getting a lot of people killed), but at least we learned along the way!" of The Last Jedi just felt a bit unsatisfying as Movie 2 In A Three Part series, I think. Like if it was episodes 8-9 in a 12-episode tv series people would think that was a good vignette to explore but I don't know... it felt a bit like it didn't have time to really grow that out. Rise of Skywalker taking a massive dump on it after the fact doesn't help that at all though.

i like event horizon even though mike is right and it has all those problems and more. the thing is: those problems are in service of what is ultimately a really goofy space horror movie thats a lot of fun above all else even if its dumb as hell. thats why i like it. i love the hanna-barberra sound effects demo reel at the end lmfao

This brings up something interesting. I posted over in TV about it but it's more apt here. I read and largely agree with Angelica Bastien's piece on THEM even though personally I couldn't finish it. But then on Twitter she threw out this, which gave me pause.

https://twitter.com/angelicabastien/status/1382394574140813317?s=19

This, to me, is straying way too close to the idea that there's one true take, and if you don't share it then it's a reflection on you. It's been like this for a while, but modern criticism is really leaning a bit too hard on the worth of something being linked to how much it agrees with your personal politics.

No it isn't how it has to be right now. There are other anti-bot measures Newegg can take without this weird raffle bullshit, but they won't do it because it's really just a ploy to make people spend more money and off-load low quality-to-actually-dangerous parts that would have never sold otherwise.

The mood at the end of Loguetown was that this is the crew's big departure and the real start of their journey. That energy and excitement carries over to reverse mountain and builds up to the moment where they finally enter the Grand Line. I'm glad I skipped the filler arc because 7.5 episodes of Whatever would've taken the wind out of those sails.

I really wish it would, I lucked out and got a good 1080 for close to what it's actually worth off an ebay seller I'd used before and knew sells reliable stuff, but literally everything else, every single store, big and microscopically niche, were sold out of the newest stuff pretty much indefinitely. I even got a not-public tip for when a restock would happen, was there for it at ground zero and they sold out entirely as I was checking out, the entire various run of restock in what was like ten minutes probably. It feels nigh impossible to get a new card legitimately right now, so we've had to resort to stuff like the raffles just to be allowed to get the first whacks at new stock before every single one goes to some russian basement or some richie rich in who knows where in bulk like they have been. And it's not just newegg, it's practically everywhere and other things that have been tried have failed.

It sucks that they bundle the items people want with items nobody wants, but there's nothing inherently wrong with a raffle system. I'd rather just sign up for raffles at my leisure than hope I can react to the discord alerts I've set up in hopes that I can place an order in the 10 second window before everything gets sold out. Even without bots involved there are so many people with alerts set up that it'd still be very difficult.

The weekend after TLJ came out was like a nice day on town before the unexpected meteor hit. Out of a group of 4 friends, I was the one who enjoyed TLJ the most. Even the one that didn't like it still liked talking of what she thought were the better scenes of the movie (Rey in the cave, the throne room fight). People loved it, people hated it. People were mixed. Then the meteor arrived. The reason TLJ hit so hard was because people wedged that polarized reception into the culture war. There was someone on Twitter who made an interesting thread of how the likes of far-right and alt-right figures weaponized the movie as some kind of feminist or woke nuclear weapon. Now they do this with just about every blockbuster but the impact was a lot smaller whenever a movie got critical acclaim and a billion dollars. The last movie before TLJ that got this much fire was the new Ghostbusters. I saw the new Ghostbusters years later. I thought it sucked (although I liked Leslie Jones's character). But I saw it nothing more as a weak attempt to be hip with an old franchise. But at the same time I admire the movie basically began the end of Milo Yiannopoulos's career because he harassed Jones and got banned from Twitter.

People have the right to not like the movie. But holy poo poo are there real bad faith reviewers out there who all seem to have some sort of weird alt-right or alt-lite.

So now you got a trilogy that hates itself."

It was kinda wild to see a lot of those people move on to hating on the live action Mulan and ranting about Mary Sues, in hopes that they were beating everyone to the punch.

And then nobody really cared because as far as cultural presence goes, just like basically all of the Disney live action remakes it straight up didn't exist.

Bitcoin loving sucks and is literally just destroying our planet to get some fake money, but I think it's impact on GPU prices is a bit overblown. Yes, obviously it has an impact, but there's just a huge chip shortage in general because of how badly COVID hosed the global supply chain. There should have been a lot more GPU's on the market in general, but now manufacturers are only pushing out a trickle and that trickle is immediately getting snapped up by miners and scalpers.

Hopefully come the next round of GPU releases the global chip shortage will have been mitigated somewhat, and also Nvidia/AMD put some controls in place against scalping since the shortage has been a PR nightmare for them. In the meantime I'm really hoping my 1080Ti doesn't die because I'd be hosed unless I wanted to shell out like $2-3K for some card on ebay that was absolutely resealed after being used for mining.

There has also been a steady uptick of more professional and analytical reviewers that were able to piece together why the new Mulan was a mess. Pointing at the really half-assed effort of trying to seem realistic but at the same time doing nonsensical interpretations of Chinese magic. And that does more mileage than 3 hour videos of yelling 'THAT MAKES NO SENSE'.

Honestly, most of the problems people have with TLJ can be fixed by adding an additional scene or two. Like, just have Holdo talking to one of her subordinates being all "Alright, it goes against what I think is best, but if you're willing to vouch for this Poe guy and think it'll get him to stand down, I'll cue him in on the plan...". And then Poe just bursts in with his mutiny crew and Holdo shoots the subordinate she's been talking to a look.

It's really amazing how many of the nitpicks he has with TLJ are things that apply to pretty much every movie in the Star Wars franchise. Like, complaining that the design of the bombers in the opening are unrealistic and are just the designs of WWII-era bombers thrown into space just makes me think "Have you actually seen a Star Wars before?"
