The LP series punch WAY above their price range.

I've got the JBL LSR305Ps, and the matching subwoofer (LSR310?), and they sound great. Those Kalis look really nice though, and you get a bigger speaker for the same price.

I have no prior experience with monitors so take this with a grain of salt, but I love my Yamaha HS5s. To me they sound great and give me a good-enough reference. I do a lot of bass also, and don't feel the need for larger drivers.

I really like my Presonus Eris E5s however wish I'd gotten the E8s now. It's rare I crank it but sometimes I feel like bigger speakers would be nice, if only for the better/bigger bass response. I think 'studio' space and neighbours/others in your house are the main things to consider, my 5 inch speakers are great all things considered and strike a good balance, just sometimes it would be nice to have more oomph.

Another thing is the 8 inch monitors are freakin huge. I actually am running the jbl 104s in two rooms now and as long as you pull em away from the wall a bit you can get full enough sound for an apartment no problem

I think I'd like to take a deeper dive on recording technique. Any recommendations on a good book on the subject? I'm interested in details like mic placement etc. as well as mixing. I have my eye on either Modern Recording Techniques or The Recording Engineer's Handbook, but I'm open to other suggestions too.

So got my ipad running. Got my akai professional ready to roll. Downloaded Cubase AND Korg Gadget. Got my guitars and pedals ready to go. And I've been spending the last few days running around like their head is cut off trying to figure out how to use it. Already been hosed over buying the right cables that accept a usb c type ipad. And now Im willing to throw the big bucks at an interface that'll hopefully solve anything. What do you think of this type of IRig? https://www.guitarcenter.com/IK-Mul...KBoCRCoQAvD_BwE The internet is also telling me to buy an apple camera connector but I'm hoping this makes that unnecessary.

Do not get an iRig, do not get any piece of gear that works only with your iPad and nothing else due to bespoke connector bullshit, unless it truly is the best piece of gear for your purpose (like if you need something ultra portable). iPad is USB class-compliant so practically everything USB can talk to it- including lots of poo poo that didn’t before. My Soundcraft Signature 12MTK mixer/interface works a treat with my iPad. Lots of usb mics, interfaces, keyboards, etc, will do the same. If it’s a Lightning connector iPad, just get the camera dongle- it’s great, it lets you charge your iPad at the same time as plugging poo poo into it. If it’s a USB-C iPad just get a USB-C hub, or a matching USB cable. Then plug whatever interface/mixer (get a mixer) you want into it

Its a 4th generation Ipad Air that only allows Usb C type cables to connect to it. That lightning connector sounds cool as hell. Ive also looked at Shure's 129 dollar interface that supposedly works with ipads. Just dont wanna buy something that yet again doesnt work for this insanely annoying bespoke piece of machinery

Nothing worked with my iPad till I got the connector that charges since a lot of devices need more power than the iPad alone can deliver.

Just try it with a bog-standard focusrite or mackie or yamaha or soundcraft or tascam or behringer, and if it doesn’t work just return it (but it will probably work). A USB C-to-USB A hub is like $15 (get a powered one for best results, but a portable one will be fine for running a bunch of stuff) or you could drop three bills on a piece of kit made for an older type of connector that your iPad doesn’t even have, and marketed to a super-niche corner of music hobbyists. Also like 90% of those products are like 5+ years old. That category of “made for iPad” device (which was made for shittier, less powerful iPads) doesn’t exist anymore because iPad went USB class-compliant and Apple (smartly) began to chase more general/powerful computing roles for iPad. also why in the world would you think that lightning is better than USB-C? Is this your first iOS device? trilobite terror fucked around with this message at 14:03 on Apr 7, 2021 |

You mentioned a Soundcraft Signature 12MTK mixer/interface and I was trying to find a cheaper alternative. My ignorance is showing. Dug into my musical equipment and guess what just found an M-Audio interface. And I'll get my hands on a powered USB C to USB A hub to connect to the Ipad. Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it!!! e: I mean not find a powered hub ^^^^

Anyone have a recommendation for a good workstation desk in the $300-$400 range? I'd been using an ikea Linnmon that has completely deteriorated. Also they've discontinued the model and what they've replaced it with isn't as deep. I love the Output Platform desks, just don't wanna drop $700 on one. Bonus points if it has a tray for a midi keyboard.

I get crazy hum/buzzing from my electric guitar (humbuckers) when I'm playing through my interface. It gets better/worse depending on where I am in the room and my orientation. Does anyone have tips on reducing it? Is it just something everyone deals with? Guitar is a new Ibanez JSM20, cables are new. ashgromnies fucked around with this message at 19:18 on Apr 17, 2021 |

Have you ruled out the guitar and the cable? (Ie tested that you don't get this with a different cable or with an amp)? Otherwise maybe it's a grounding problem with your computer/interface?

Before I got an interface with balanced outs my setup was buzz city, could hear the GPU spooning up and and down through it. I was having some buzzing the other day which was really irritating and I thought it was because I was using my synth just off USB power rather than PSU but it turned out one of my speaker cables had come out a little bit, fiddling with that and putting it back in properly solved the problem.

does anyone use an ipad with a midi controller in a live setting? I may need to go beyond my usual sound palate of Nord Electro patches for a gig pretty soon and I'm trying to figure out the most economical way of doing it. I've used a laptop with Logic in the past, and could go that route again, but I hate bringing my laptop to gigs. Also I have a newer iPad Air with just a USB C port, so I'm guessing I'd need some sort of ridiculous chain of splitters and dongles to plug in a USB keyboard, power the iPad, and get sound out of it ... poo poo, is it even possible?

If your controller has Bluetooth, or you have a Bluetooth MIDI adapter plug, it’ll also work with that just fine.

Does anyone know of a good way to rackmount a desktop audio interface? I have a 2nd gen Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 and my new desk has rackmount space and I'd like to make use of it to maximize my desktop space. Any kind of universal ears/brackets that I can install?
|
# ? Apr 30, 2021 18:20 |
if there aren't rack ears available for it you could just buy a rack tray/shelf and let it sit in there on the shelf (https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/UTR1--middle-atlantic-products-utr1-1u-utility-rack-shelf)

You'll need whatever the adaptor is that has power in to the iPad plus an out for USB, since the iPad alone likely won't be sending enough power to the keyboard. At least that's the case for my lightning one. When its all hooked up though its pretty simple. Power charger from wall into splitter, one cable to iPad, one cable to the USB device. Whatever the USB C version is should work the same.

Not sure if this is the appropriate thread to ask this question, but I'm looking to record myself playing some instruments for the purpose of self critique and collaboration. I've taken the first step and recorded myself with my phone...and that sucks. Mainly because all the audio is coming thru the phone mic which sounds exactly how you would expect. Room noise and all. So for thes guys that do play along videos on YouTube to published tunes, is there a good method to capture video and have the audio source be something inside the computer or say a USB sound card? Or is this all synched in post? Tia!

Youll want to grab an audio interface, Focusrite's Scarlett line is great and pretty affordable. They usually package them with a free version of Ableton and/or ProTools. From there you can use your webcam to record the video. Then you can use a free vid editing software like Filmora or something of the like to sync up the vid/audio.

I have a scarlett 18i20 and an octopre. And a bunch of other stuff I've just never messed with video. What I am hearing is there isn't an all in one audio source selectable video capture software...sounds like I'd need to record video and overlay the audio. Cool that Ableton supports light video editing.
