I mean, didn't the artist for Alien Armageddon get their start doing a porn Flash game based on Duke3D.

Haven't gotten around to trying Alien Armageddon, I kept on meaning to but whenever I felt in the mood to try it I'd go and there'd be an announcement of the next major update coming soon so I kept putting it off.

Modern Duke3D mods in general tend to be way, way too much. Too much of just about everything. Too much visual noise, too much content, too much skeez, too much going on at once, too much of all of it. It's all impressive or whatever, it's just so overwhelming. AMC TC is the epitome of inscrutable bloat, Alien Armageddon's combat set pieces are a total clusterfuck of enemies & bullets & mines & explosions and holy poo poo there's even another player character running around doing what you do, and even WG Realms has some superfluous poo poo like multiple currencies for buying chests and using abilities--that's right, there are too many abilities also, each with alternates to choose from!

The fast and fluid simplicity of classic FPS games is a big part of what makes them special and being so pick-up-and-play is the reason I spend so much time jumping into them. The overblown systems and features just aren't my bag.

Rapture and Columbia are two of the most impressive settings I've ever experienced in an FPS, regarding the gameplay I feel in retrospect the RPG elements are what drag the franchise down the most(kinda like how I've talked before about how the Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises would both be better off as straight FPS games rather than RPG's that use FPS mechanics for their combat)

I remember playing a few levels of the 360 version with the framerate uncapped (I know Digital Foundry hates it when games do that, but I found it fascinatingly nostalgic for some reason), then getting myself the PC version on Steam it running pretty badly on my Athlon 3800/GeForce 7600GT for some reason. Never hit the plot twists. I think I've been spoiled on them, but never dug deep to confirm that.

The gunplay was... okay. At best. I guess it wasn't the focus. I thought the infinite respawns cheapened things but having played System Shock now, I understand that the series was just Like That, so I'll give it a pass. Didn't really like the Plasmids as much; I guess shocking a mook to wrench him was nice, but I didn't get deep enough to do crazy poo poo with them (assuming you ever do).

1: Impressive setting and an intriguing story let down by wack rear end gunplay and some dodgy design decisions. Also, I've said this before, Ken Levine reusing the plot twist from System Shock 2 to much lesser effect.

2: One of my favorites. Do not understand the hate it gets. Cool story, satisfying gameplay, excellent DLC (Minerva's Den is chef's kiss).

Infinite: Ken Levine completely off his shits in the worst way possible. Like 1, it has a fantastic setting utterly let down by some truly atrocious writing, an obvious and obnoxious twist, and stupid rear end design decisions. The DLCs are even worse, with Burial At Sea reaching levels of stupid that felt directly insulting to the player.

Let's not forget the part where Ken Levine decided he was tired of working on big games so instead of leaving Irrational he shut Irrational down and made ~80 people redundant overnight.

I'd love to see a thought piece on that, just as I'd love to see a comparison/contrast between how Duke Nukem Forever tanked its franchise where Doom (2016) revitalized that one and made it feel exciting and present for millions of people.

Ehh, I suspect that Irrational's dissolution was not Ken Levine's decision to make. I have nothing to confirm this, but I suspect someone at 2K or Take-Two got pissed at Infinite's development turning into a money pit, so they sat Levine down, told him they'd be paradropping in a new producer to assemble whatever they had into a finished game, and that unless Infinite met some ridiculously massive sales target Irrational would cease to exist. While I wholly agree that it was Levine's mismanagement that brought Irrational to this state, and we can argue back and forth on whether he should have stayed with Take-Two or left the industry or whatever, I would not pin Irrational's ultimate dissolution solely on him.

(And now that I had to do some wiki-diving, I've just learned that Ghost Story Games, the studio Levine formed out of Irrational, does not appear to have shipped a single game since its founding in 2017.)

Literally everything I've read about that event made it sound like it came straight from Levine's decision making. https://www.gamespot.com/articles/bioshock-creator-irrational-games-is-shutting-down/1100-6417821/

That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition."

At least they helped all the laid off employees find new jobs. I guess. :colbert:

... it isn't like he could wind down Irrational Games if he wanted. Again, the owners were Take Two. Maybe he expressed that way for whatever reason, but the ones who decide if the winding down is done or not were Take Two. And they surely did it with spreadsheet revenues and costs, and possible risks in front of them, not because Kevin said so and they obeyed him blindly.

I played through episode 1 and part of episode 2 of Duke3D with the new release of Alien Armageddon and this describes it perfectly. It's clear a lot of effort went into it, but the effort was spent on adding more of everything regardless of whether it improves the game or not.
Old enemies have new variants, entirely new enemies, new weapons, an upgrade system, but a lot of these changes just aren't fun. I don't think anyone wanted more types of suicide drones, including one with a hitscan machine gun. You also can't trick them into blowing up by closing a door between it and you. All of the enemies were made way more aggressive, including giving them Blood cultist level of reaction times.

I'm consistently annoyed at how Duke3D mods and TCs have this WOW BUILD ENGINE EFFECTS thing about them where everything is ramped way too far. Just because you can doesn't mean you should, and going back through a ton of these mods over the years, the most popular ones were always a jumbled loving mess. I think it specifically got so bad with DukePlus, which had a shitload of extremely over the top scripting-wank because god drat we gotta use EVERY new Eduke32 feature. Then there's AMC TC, a clusterfuck I will never be able to finish because it has way, WAY too much poo poo and isn't very well balanced in it's mess.
The only mod released so far that actually did things very well is Duke Nukem Forever 2013, and it's because it has it's sights set squarely on just recreating interesting things and building a bit on Duke's gameplay loop.
