Fun fact, the tea act actually lowered the taxes on British imported tea. It was unpopular because it was intended to undercut the prices of illegally smuggled tea. For content https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rxmt5KQ5Hw

Actually even very freshly boiled your tea can only hold about 450g of sugar per 100mL. If you're talking iced tea you're looking at only like 70-100g/100mL probably depending on how cold it is. Beyond that you're not putting sugar in the tea anymore, just putting it in the same cup.

I'm pretty sure ridiculous levels of trial and error, and possibly sharing information with other players were also intended. A lot of those old games aren't very long when you get past the fake difficulty.

The sugar molecule forms loads of hydrogen bonds with water, which means that even after cooling it's quite easy to create a supersaturated sugar solution (not quite sure if the 4-5x mass of sugar per every unit of water would stay in solution once cooled) compared to an ionic substance like table salt.

Beeswax posted:Fake? "Fake difficulty" is a concept that I find sort of hard to explain, but having played way too many adventure games, I know it when I see it. Ages ago, someone named Graham Nelson wrote a document in which he laid out of "player's bill of rights" : it's too long to quote here in its entirety, but it makes a lot of sense. He was writing about text adventures specifically, but a lot of the conventions in early graphic adventures such as the ____ Quest games grew out of those, so. http://www.ifarchive.org/if-archive/programming/general-discussion/Craft.Of.Adventure.txt (ctrl-F to 3 Bill of Player's Rights)

It is possible to make a game difficult by having it crash at random intervals meaning the average amount of time necessary to complete it goes up but few people would consider that appealing. It does not become much more appealing if you make that experience diegetic.

A lot of it (at least in our family) was that we were poor and rarely got a new game. So we played the living poo poo out of everything. I still hate/love Digger T Rock on NES. Batman Begins on the Lynx on the otherhand is a masterpiece. Learnt that you would get different enemy wave patterns depending on your combination of buttons through the menus.

Beeswax posted:Fake? A classic of fake difficulty is the hidden block in jump&run games. The player tries to jump over an obstacle but there's a hidden block in the path, so they fall and have to restart. No amount of system mastery can counter the game loving the player over, and that's the essence of fake difficulty.

For the pedants: The difficulty is real, in that the game is more difficult for it, but it is "fake" in that it isn't difficulty born from challenging the skills inherent to the game. If "artificial difficulty" or "raw bullshit" suits you better, so be it.
