Of all the ones so far, the associate producer seemed at least decent. Levar Burton deserves it, though :colbert:

I just assumed they’re doing this to wind down the season and bring in Ken Jennings as the permanent host in Season 38 or whatever next season is.

But without watching a Burton episode I’m already rooting for him to be the permanent host if he wants the job.

The military-industrial complex blows and all, but it's not as if they ginned up Russian aggression against Ukraine. Raytheon or whoever making money from increased missile purchases is really the least of the problems with the Ukraine situation.

I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary that would suggest this round of tensions is about to go hot? Zelensky is just blustering to appeal to the domestic audience and encourage allies to support him; Putin's still playing at his own grandstanding escalation. Ukraine sure af ain't gonna initiate hostilities and Russia is very unlikely to barring Putin huffing his own farts more than usual.

That's a joke. But honestly? I think Ukraine is a good buffer to have against an expansionist Russia. I think a strong Ukrainian military, backed with weapons, supplies, and intel from the West, is a good deterrent to have against Putin. I think the more costly it would be for him to invade, the less likely he is to do it. And the less wars there are, the better the world is off.

Yeah, it's most likely grandstanding and chest puffing. I think it's pretty likely that you're absolutely right. But ever since Russia annexed the Crimea, Ukraine cut off Crimea's water supply, and they're getting really, really low. That could realistically cause a war, especially if Putin is losing support at home. Though I don't know the domestic situation RE: Navalny and how much support he has.

We've all been told that water wars will happen. We just don't know where the first (modern) one will be.

The Syrian resistance has been dead since 2014-2015, when Assad traded territory for time and then used that time to deliberately target the militias that were made up of disgruntled Sunni conscripts and officers while letting ISIS and AQ types live long enough so he could say they were fighting a jihadist insurgency and make Russian involvement that more palatable. The current Free Syrian Army or whatever they’re calling themselves is a Turkish proxy of Islamists and mercenaries hired to do Erdogan’s bidding in Idlib and elsewhere, namely checking Kurdish autonomy.

Assad’s Mafia state will survive the war at the cost of Syrian national identity and at least a generation’s worth of ruined lives. The only bright spot would be if Syrian Kurds somehow got a state or autonomous territory out of the mess but I’m sure we’ll find a way to gently caress them raw and hard as we always do.

If it's small enough and flying at a low enough altitude it would be processed out as chaff. There are other things that could happen too, and they mostly involve a whole lot of people being negligent/loving stupid.
Edit: The USN and Iran love to play gently caress gently caress games and antagonize each other. It could also be a military game of "I'm not touching you"

It's in intelligence failure, but presumably nothing that can carry enough high explosives to be a risk to a boat is getting that close.

I have deployment stories that I would love to share, regarding stupid TAO'S making filtering decisions that basically leave the ship blind, all for the sake of having a clean screen.

I would disagree.
They wouldn't have to sink the boat- dropping a few modified HEDP warheads would gently caress up some aircraft, if that was the their goal. Putting a few on a drone is pretty trivial, and it doesn't have to be a large drone- not a fair comparison due to flight time, linger time, remote range, blah blah blah- but ISIL modified COTS Phantom drones to carry 4× 40mm Warheads. They modified others to carry various small arms munitions like mortar rounds, and the growing trend of Suicide Drones being small and effective means they could hit some poo poo, if they chose to.

In the recent Armenia conflict, a modified Colt AN2 biplane was modified to act as a mothership, and carry loiter munitions/suicide drones to an objective area, drop them, and have the drone jockeys take over, and do their part of finding trouble.

Again, not a 1:1, but the damage even small drones can do is growing exponentially.

I have no idea how saying that the footage is actually seven years old is an own on Iran. Are we supposed to presume Iran is worse at drones now or we're better at stopping them in the intervening years? Because I have doubts.

In the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict drone deployed munitions and suicide drones were very effective against infantry and I think they'd play hell with a carrier deck. Our entire military apparatus is intentionally built to not consider cheap things so I don't think we've noticed this threat or treated it appropriately.

They don’t need to. They fly drones patrolling waters all the drat time that have cameras, including ones that can carry ordnance. While they tend to keep some level of horizontal separation, any ship transiting the SoH can be effectively overflown by Iran without Iran doing anything remotely illegal or all that provocative except that the US and Iran are adversaries.

They already did that once with footage from a Battlefield game IIRC. And Russia has done it repeatedly, one time they claimed blurred-up footage from the gunship sequence in Modern Warfare (IIRC) as being "Russian attack helicopters destroying a US convoy aiding ISIS."

The milsim FPS ARMA has also repeatedly fooled smaller TV networks around the world as well. Off the top of my head some Russian TV network used a clip of a player watching a airplane bombing something for a "honoring the heroes" propaganda show, and a Irish TV documentary mistook a fake IRA attack video for real footage.

Iran doesn't have a lot to gain by hitting some aircraft on a ship that they couldn't have gotten from shooting an RPG or a missile at a ship, but a similar amount to lose.
