You do get to a point where player wages need to take a cut (or at least their rate of growth really needs to slow down). I don't think that's all on the clubs because players and their agents have a role in that too.

That being said, I'm a bit conflicted because if anyone deserves to make money off of the game, it's the talent on the field.

I agree completely. The current wages are insane, but a big part of that is because the board kept on buying players they didn't need so they could keep their job. It's not like they didn't know that their core players were expensive and aging,. And trying to replace them with even more expensive players without cutting cost was always going to be hard. Hell, even Madrid has been tame on the transfer market compared to Barca,—although I think that has to do with all the money laundering they are doing with their supposed stadium rebuild.

Also, the whole point of all these stupid rules about board members all needing to have money is based on the fact that they can cover excessive debts. But the second the bill comes they immediately cry poor (the Arthur transfer) or join dumb ideas like the ESL. E: #capitalism

Hasn't there always been a thing that UEFA/FIFA have wanted this in order to say that if you're one league you can be one FA and reduce the home nations' power on various governing bodies? That might just be conspiracy bollocks though.

tbh I think Celtic & Rangers in the Premier League would be good and fun

Nah, that was about the prospect of a UK wide international side - FIFA have always wanted to knock the 4 home nation votes down to 1 but these days it's really not so much of a focus for them now just because the organisation is so much bigger and that's effectively diluted it (and also it's not really been a block vote since the days of Stanley Rous). FIFA rules do mean that it's one FA, one team though so the only way to have a UK team would be for the FAs to merge.

UEFA and FIFA are much more relaxed about clubs playing outside their own nations though - both Cardiff and Swansea have played in the Premiership and Wrexham and a few others play further down the pyramid. They also wouldn't have to start at the bottom of the pyramid, as lots of people have suggested (with varying degrees of seriousness) - don't forget the Premiership is officially an invitational league run by the FA, separate from the Football League (an entirely different organisation) albeit with an agreement with the EFL that the FA will invite 3 clubs up from the Championship and the EFL will accept 3 clubs from the EPL.

The point is there's nothing *legally* stopping the FA inviting Rangers, Celtic, or even the Seattle Sounders, to join the Premiership but there's also nothing legally stopping the EFL not accepting relegated clubs (this power has always been a major bargaining chip for the EFL in negotiating the solidarity payments from the FA, to the extreme discomfort of West Ham fans in 92 when it was plausible we'd have had to drop all the way to the Conference). This, incidentally, is why the Prem is still 20 clubs even though the plan has always been to drop to 18 - the EFL clubs have always voted down proposals to increase relegation from the bottom of the EFL which is also why L1 and L2 are still 24 teams. The point is without EFL cooperation (and they'll *definitely* want a word about the increased TV revenues an EPL+friends would bring in) the Premiership can't shrink to 18 or even stay at 20 clubs with 2 extras.

However there's word that BOZZA LEGERND is smiling upon the idea (presumably because of an extremely hazy idea this will somehow dampen Scottish nationalism) so it's not impossible some sort of agreement might be reached. Personally I don't think it will happen because I think (or at least hope) that the Old Firm realise that even with all the extra money sloshing around south of the border they're still going to be at best medium-sized fish in a much bigger pond.

If they wanted to increase the Premiership to 22 teams and literally just stick Rangers and Celtic into the PL that way I reckon they would have to do away with the League Cup altogether to make room for the additional fixtures. Or make the the European tournaments have a less insane amount of games. Or make International games midweek fixtures or something.

I guess the PL (or SuPL) money would be big enough to make up for the lack of European football for the Old Firm? Because there's no chance of them qualifying in a combined league, no matter how deluded their fans are.

The club's don't have to spend themselves into the ground, they do it because they want to - do one should be saying it's the players fault if they take the money when offered. The players are also better off if major names don't go bankrupt.

This paragraph was great:

quote:

Another way to think of this is, say there's a group of world-class chefs who got together one night and they all got high and they said, "Let's reinvent food". So, they got un-high, then they started to do it, and they only talk to themselves. And the guy from El Bulli made ice cream out of snails and Gordon Ramsey made curse words into custard. And you did all this and you never once gave any of this to a normal person to taste it. And then you opened up the most expensive restaurant in the world and said, "Come in". And then you're surprised when people say, "I'm not eating that poo poo. What's that?"

Thank you Barcelona for seeking new formulas for solidarity with the football family as a whole, which as we all know, is one of FC Barcelona's most inalienable principles,

"New formulas for solidarity" Xavi mutters while standing over Cruyffs grave.

I, for one, am back to supporting the Super League (but only if it has 5 teams who play against each other every weekday for 9 months a year)

Interesting comment in the comments there:

The German system is lauded here, but everybody seems to be forgetting that the Bundesliga is basically the most uncompetitive league there is, with Bayern just winning everything for a decade now.

I mean yeah, it's one of the most financially stable leagues there is, but it's also boring as poo poo and absolutely not the example you want if you're looking for an interesting competition.
