GET LOSE, YOU CAN'T COMPARE WITH MY POWERS

Mr. Nice! posted:

7%+ for processing fees? Holy cow, man, you're getting ROBBED. I don't know who you're using for payment processing, but there's no reason you should be paying more than 3%. Many processors don't even charge a percentage and just charge 25 cents per credit card transaction. Your processing fees are double what they should be.
It could be better certainly but it's never that good - often it's "interchange + 25 cents" where interchange is the passed through cost charged by the credit card company itself. Stripe is 2.9% + 30 cents with no interchange, which I think would be a small improvement. The real thing would be more payment methods.

I am happy you are (hopefully?) going to take the killer forums content and monetize it on the front page. That itself would be the draw to the forums, because it'll showcase the site as a legitimate force on the internet, and that we like pie.
I don't even want to say monetize - my goal would be more to find like-minded people who would fit in with the culture here, and show them the value of forums over social media once they are here. Frontpage articles are just way more linkable than random forum posts.

I started looking at a few a bit ago. Square actually upped their rate from when I used them last. They're 2.9% plus 30 cents for api based transactions which ours certainly will be. I think you can accept ETF payments and perhaps even crypto that way, as well.

Check with some major banks as well. BOFA used to call me often when I owned my food truck and offer me 0%+30 cents per. I stuck with square, though, because it was still just flat 2.7% for me which came out slightly cheaper per transaction. If my average transaction was higher it would have been worthwhile.

can you put a mode toggle somewhere like maybe under the forums nav dropdown at the bottom of the page or something? it's v tedious to change mode by going through the control panel on mobile and my geriatric eyeballs cannot discern anything while outside of my cave habitat

also include extra modes for powerusers like darkroom mode or hot dog mode

also dark mode fucks up so many smiles and tags lol

Stripe has been very pleasant to work with in my limited experience. Implementing it is an afternoon's work.

Thanks for taking on the task of stewarding these forums into a new and better era. Even after the lowtax implosion I was skeptical that it could be turned around, but the forums are making great strides I think. I don't have anyone in particular in mind, but I hope that there's some process of reversing the bans of the many posters that got hit with lowtax grudge bans and other dumb things like that (while keeping the terrible people out).

Personally I wouldn't mind if some of the money I spent on forums stuff went to your, the owner's, pocket. That said, it would kinda own if you converted this place to a non-profit. The hipster bragging rights would be sweet. It's probably more trouble than it's worth though.

would have been hilarious except the part where lowtax probably would have spun it as "the forums don't make enough money to afford a backup, please donate more!" and then bought cookies with the proceeds

Being able to peer into that alternate timeline, I can assure you it would have simply been a redirect to the frontpage while they get XenForo 2.0 set up, it's totally coming you guys, they swear.

Perpetuating the stereotype since 1978.
Sorry if this has been covered, but since the site has to go down for several hours, would it be cost-effective to host failover servers at another site, using something like Zerto to handle the replication, or is that just too much of a headache and cost for a few hours downtime every so often?

Fwiw I think this is unprecedented - my memory is bad but I don't think they've ever taken the servers offline like this.

However, yes, having servers at another site would be good overall and is something we're researching already.
