The hilarious thing is that former GOP Representative and convicted felon Michael Grimm who just recently got out of prison for tax fraud and is considering running for his old district is in the GOP district most likely to be unaffected by redistricting. While "rising star" and only female millennial GOP Representative Elise Stefanik is in one of the districts most likely to merge with another GOP district or get more Democratic. Again, it would be great for Congress to expand the number of members it has. Massachusetts gained 7 percent in population and will not gain a representative. There is no reason to keep the cap at 435 anymore.

There is no reason to keep the cap at 435 anymore. Expanding the House would also have the added bonus of diluting the Senate's impact on the electoral college. Each state gets one EC vote per representative and senator, so small states with two senators and one rep are disproportionately represented in the electoral college. For example, if we doubled the number of total representatives in the House, California would go from 55 electoral votes to 108 (a 96% increase), while a state like Wyoming or North Dakota would go from 3 to 4 EC votes (a 33% increase). It would make the EC way more representative (though still dumb compared to the popular vote). Seph fucked around with this message at 22:45 on Apr 26, 2021 |
