Sagebrush posted:Every time I see one of those videos I'm like...what the gently caress were they trying to do? That's like a hundred-foot tree. The absolute best case scenario is it falls across a bunch of people's lawns and driveways and crushes their bushes and fences and has to be chopped up to let people get into their garages. Much more likely is it falls across the street, falls on some power lines, falls onto one or more roofs. Climb, segment, and then rope down the cuts unless you're a total rear end in a top hat or just don't care about (best case) six inch divots in the lawn.

Mimesweeper posted:Yeah they usually preheat it to make sure there's no water before the whole part that can turn into a bomb. Not sure what went wrong there. I've toured a continuous casting steel mill, which was loving awesome and I highly recommend it if anyone gets a chance. They try to dry the poo poo out, but from what I saw it's basically small wet charge all day everyday. The plant I toured melted down scrap, which they kept outside in giant piles, so there was always a bit of moisture in there. Touring the plant every 15 minutes or so the entire building would shake slightly and you'd hear this resonanting BOOOOOOM from the casting area. Nothing near as dramatic as the video, but they wouldn't let you in the area when they did a charge either. The first time you hear it everyone gets a little freaked, and the workers are all "They just charged the furnace, no biggie." Watching an electric arc furnace do its thing from a few hundred feet away is probably the coolest poo poo I've ever been near. It's like Zeus on a bender.

In this sweet animation of the latest in steel casting technology it looks like they have the scrap in a hopper above the furnace until it heats up to a temperature that would guarantee all the moisture is gone.
