What is this, anyway? The Gabriel Knight series are 3 adventure games with absurdly long titles released by Sierra in the '90s. The games that make up the series are: Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father, released in 1993 The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery, released in FMV hell (otherwise known as 1995) Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned, released in 1999 While being Sierra adventure games, these don't share the obnoxious qualities of most Sierra adventure games. That's because these games are all spearheaded by Jane Jensen, who seem to want to get away from all the cheap deaths that came from older Sierra games. She then went on to....make a bunch of hidden object games. Sounds promising.... It is! I will admit, the later games suffer in quality because of their chosen mediums, but the writing is decent, its nice to encounter a Sierra game not full of garbage game overs, and it's a decent change of pace. Of course, these games DO suffer from typical adventure game logic of "character picks up stuff that had no immediate use but eventually does and AREN'T YOU LUCKY YOU PICKED UP THAT CAT HAIR?" Hasn't this been done before? Indeed. Currently there is a playthrough of the first game by flamedrake which can be found here, and a playthrough of the first 2 games by Ensign_Ricky and Xander77 which can be found here. While they have done a good job of going through these games, those two are all screenshot LPs. We intend to do ours as video LPs because VOICE ACTING You'll just need to watch to find out what I mean Is this your usual crap? Yep! Let’s be honest, what is a Sierra game other than a hidden object game at heart? They called ‘em pixel hunts for a reason ya know.

I assume the West Germany thing is meant to be read from the return address on the letter, which would've been written long before the reunification of Germany. ...The problem is, if we assume Grandpa was still alive to receive the letter, it almost certainly had to have been written before East and West Germany were divided in the first place! I just spent too much time thinking about this. Good luck with the LP! I love the first GK game, and I'm looking forward to revisiting the second and discovering the third.

I don't know whether to be disappointed or relieved that you didn't climb the ladder in the bookshop. The result was the second most quoted line from this game among my friends. I recently got around to playing through the remake of this game, and it's interesting to see what they changed and what they didn't. One major change was not introducing Grandma Knight until considerably later in the game, when you might have more reason to want to poke around in the attic and find the secret of the clock. The sketchbook was relocated, I think to the bookstore, where it makes a bit more sense to find it early on. It's hard to say whether that's much of an improvement, though, because it also introduced a terrible puzzle that isn't in the original version, makes no sense at all, and I hate it.

Aww. I was hoping you'd suffer through the remaster. Video is really the right format to show off all the weird animation issues it has. Edit - you've linked flamedrake's playthrough twice. Xander77 fucked around with this message at 13:55 on Mar 23, 2021 |

I think it can be similarly loud (though you should pay attention to the music volume relative to voice acting), since you are not talking over the voice acting. Duly noted! We actually record the game and commentary separately and I mix it in post, so this is something I can fix going forward without too much trouble. Once part two is up (probably tomorrow) let me know how it is.

I don't know if the translation of that poem is going to be plot-relevant, but it's odd how off the English is. Maybe it's supposed to be done by a non-native English speaker, or by Gabriel himself? I imagine Jensen wrote both, so there may be a reason for it. Here's an off-hand translation of my own: Three dragons creep into my sleep My soul they want to gobble whole with fiery breath and forked tongues enjoying every meal. In the second line the phrase 'zum Fraß' carries a clear connotation of bestial eating ('devour' works too), so 'repast' is odd. And while 'die Seele' could mean 'the soul/spirit', the context here implies 'my soul' (but that could be an ambiguity the game is intentionally obscuring; it's also the object of 'wollen', not the subject. The third line in German is a bit odd, since 'feurigen Atems' means 'of/belonging to the fiery breath', and maybe is meant to connect with the previous 'Fraß'? I'm not a native speaker, so I may be missing something idiomatic here. Scheißjäger could mean one thing, but scheiß- is often as not used that way as an intensifier (something like 'the drat hunter') or it could also mean 'the lovely hunter'.

Probably the third most disconcerting change in the remake is that they pronounce many of the names differently. "Loa" is particularly noticeable, with the emphasis on the second syllable rather than the first. You get used to it, though, which makes going back to this version feel that much weirder. Also noticeable is that the narrator in the remake doesn't pronounce the H in Times-Picayune. One of my favorite things about this game is that Gabriel does, in fact, record the lecture, and if you listen to the recording, Hartridge does actually trail off mumbling about butterflies and fireflies. Another is the amount of detail in the seemingly inconsequential interactions. You can often tell who was in charge of a specific Sierra game, or a specific part of a game, by clicking a random cursor on a random object and seeing whether you get just a generic message or something relevant to what you did. Jane Jensen loved that kind of detail.

Ah, this episode opens with that puzzle I mentioned that became so much worse in the remake. For whatever reason, once you have the hundred dollars from selling the painting, Willy Walker will raise the price of the crocodile mask to $120. I think he just does it to spite Gabriel, which makes complete sense, but you do still need to get the mask, and buying it with the money you have is no longer an option. So... just take a guess what you have to do. In fact, take as many guesses as you want. You'll never figure it out. As for learning that Sam is a retired jeweler, I'm pretty sure the bartender tells you that at some point. It kind of comes out of nowhere because it needs to. This is another thing they "fixed" in the remake - you learn about Sam's profession by reading an ad in the newspaper, which is both the lead that opens Napoleon House on your map and also makes it seem very strange that he takes so much convincing to do any jewelry work. Why is he buying ad space for a business he no longer runs? I do love Gabriel's fake Irish accent, as cheesy as it is. As a kid, I was impressed that he could perform a fake accent performing a fake accent. Now, I think it's kind of bad, but in the way that it should be.

So... just take a guess what you have to do. In fact, take as many guesses as you want. You'll never figure it out. It's fairly obvious. You start a fire in the store that causes 'smoke damage' to the mask, and then you convince Walker to give you a discount. To start the fire, you need to get a cigarette, of course. That's done by talking to the teenager in the park, who wants you to buy him a pack of cigarettes. You do this, but in addition to taking his money, you also have to steal one cigarette out of the pack before giving it to him. Then you can start the fire in Walker's shop. However, first you have to disable the smoke detector, or else Walker puts out the fire. (Actually, you don't disable the smoke detector, you steal the fire extinguisher; the detector goes off anyway). To steal the fire extinguisher, first talk to Walker about snakes, then get the fake rubber snake that Grace keeps in her desk and scare him with it.
