Platystemon posted:SchnorkIes, you gotta change that to “against symptomatic disease in the old and infirm” before the mods get you again. No I think I just made a typo. I'm looking at staff numbers, one sec lol. 7.1 vs 29.6 = a reduction of 22.5. 22.5/29.6 = 76% reduction of all disease 3.6 vs 27.8 = a reduction of 25.2. 25.2/27.8 = 91% reduction of symptomatic disease So spreaders are reduced by 76%, uptake looks like it's headed towards stalling out in the 45-50% of all population range (could change once it opens for younger people though), 76% of 50% is 38% reduction in the number of viable spreaders, which doesn't really do a ton unfortunately. These are great vaccines, but they aren't going to be able to do much on their own. The eradication campaigns that succeeded with less effective vaccines did so in an environment without pandemic disease prevalence or such high levels of vaccine hesitancy.

The D614G mutation demonstrates evidence of increasing virus transmissibility (4). The E484K mutation, found within the receptor-binding domain of the spike protein, is also seen in the variants of concern B.1.351 and P.1, which show evidence of reduced neutralization by convalescent and postvaccination sera (5,6). Mutation W152L might reduce the effectiveness of neutralizing antibodies Everything has D614G and has for an entire year. E484K is notable. W152L is has also been seen in the Xmas tree strain, I think. (e: it actually has the substitution W152C, which may or may not behave essentially identically) So sure it’s a mutant, but it’s got stuff we’re going to be seeing more and more. Buff Hardback posted:To counteract schnorklesposting: I don't really understand the point of these figures. They do not reflect vaccine efficacy, because they do not take into account the baseline unvaccinated risk level of covid, or time. You'd need to somehow account for both risk over time and change in number of fully vaccinated over time. It's not like an unvaccinated person will always get covid 100% of the time vs 0.005% of the time, you know? I think in the present variant landscape we're looking at 70-80% in efficacy against infection (which is amazing, honestly), and that's not even capable of achieving herd immunity with flawless adult uptake, which we're nowhere near. If we had better uptake and effective NPIs, it would absolutely slow covid down to where contact tracing and local lockdowns would be in easy mode, but we have abandoned NPIs entirely and are seemingly working on banning many of them in the US, while vaccination efforts are stalling out.

Yeah I also don’t see the value of breaking out that statistic. Only zero point zero one six percent of the U.S. population tested positive yesterday, so things are going great.

I mean I have some sympathy for minority communities mistrusting government initiatives, since it's a month beginning with a letter and that means significant portions of the government are low-key trying to kill them. How are they supposed to tell the difference between "government trying to kill us like usual" and "no actually it's different this time" ?

Officially it's, "We're listening to the concerns of the community." Unofficially it's, "We don't want to have to spend tons of money fending off a shitload of lawsuits from the loving morons around here." I know I've told this story before, but after the Stoneman Douglas shooting our students voted to have a memorial service. Note: memorial service. We got dozens of emails, many from the same 4-5 people, all of which vaguely threatened to murder our students for being uh "anti-gun." All of them were pages and pages long with randomly capitalized words. poo poo like this: "I will not stand idly by and see Our Freedom taken away and replaced with Tyranny. Wouldn't it be a shame if some Patriot drove by this so-called "memorial" when all the Students were Peacefully Assembling and killed them all with an Assault Weapon? They'll all be right there, in One Place. Vulnerable. Who would be Responsible for such a Tragedy?" This is why we had to have a literal loving SWAT team patrolling our school so our kids could pay their respects to all the students murdered by these psychos' brother-in-madness.

Things are accelerating for the better and the worse here in Switzerland. The good news is that vaccine availability is moving quickly, imo. Here in the conton of Bern, they have opened it up to group L (most people who are like under 65 with no pre-existing conditions etc are in group N). Here in Bern they sort of wait until they have enough for someone to get both jabs before they allow them to book their first appointment. And I wonder if they will wait to make sure they have enough for everyone in the group to get both before they open up N. I think Vaud has opened it up to everybody but I'm not going to look it up. At this point, Switzerland-wide just about 30% of the population has had their first jab. However the numbers are drifting upwards so it's just going to get worse before it gets better. LUCKILY the weather has been very nice so I think people are hanging out outside but who knows. They opened up gyms a while back and I have seen people on treadmills which under normal circumstances I just have to shake my head at.
