Not that he shouldn't be booted. But it would change nothing. There are many Steven Crowders out there who could replace him in an instant, he's just the latest in a line of many. To solve that problem, to take the narrative away from there, requires a lot more. That is Natalie's point. Goddammit this is what happens when I go to sleep for 6 hours and the only people ostensibly on my side go off on tangents far off my own point.

Anyway just to clarify my position:

1) I agree it's stupid to put faith in corporations to decide who or what to ban.

2) Nationalising said corporations is a one good way to combat this.

3) My disagreement with Contra is more of how she phrased it then the underlying thesis of her Tweet thread (which is why I said she made good points up until the last tweet), which I understand may more of a 'me' problem than anything on her end.

How do we all feel about the Fishman Island arc? Does it deal with its themes well? I thought the revelation of Fisher Tiger's backstory and Prince Fukaboshi admitting they were partly responsible for the New Fishman Pirates were pretty good but I wonder if others have different perspectives lest I come off as whitewashing its flaws.

I hated the fishman arc my first time reading it, but like a lot of post-timeskip arcs it really benefits from being able to be read through at a decent clip instead of release schedule per-chapter. I remember there being a lot of "this sucks and it's just Arlong 2.0" early on but I came around in the latter half when it becomes increasingly clear that Hody and his crew are basically just fishman supremacists and actively don't give a poo poo if they hurt other people: they aren't doing what they do out of any sense of genuine hurt. Though I think the anime gives them a bit of additional backstory or something? I don't know I didn't watch the anime.

One specific thing that I liked was that both Queen Otohime and Fisher Tiger are treated as being correct, one fights for the future and the other fights for the here and now. They seem diametrically opposed but each one acknowledges and respects the ideals of the other.

Doing a full re-read of One Piece to catch up (haven't read any since the start of Wano) is somewhere on my to do list, so maybe I'll give it a more critical look when I get there.

I hope it's not true. It was pretty crushing when it turned out that the composer for Metal Gear Solid had plagiarized the main theme and after it became public Harry Gregson Williams had to stop using the theme in games after Snake Eater.

I mean, she's a prolific composer for a variety of projects; if you work in that business and your specialty isn't weird abstract stuff you're going to wear some influences strongly.

(cue music nerds with all the stuff John Williams borrowed from)

Random anime recommendation speaking of Yoko Kanno - if you haven't seen it, track down Magnetic Rose (a short from Memories, a short film anthology) to see a collaboration with Kanno (with an assist by Puccini), early Satoshi Kon and and Katsuhiro Otomo. Always felt like this one got buried because it was part of an anthology (with the other two being a little less, well, universally praised), but it's a great work for all of them.

Kanno's habit of taking from existing music has been quietly known for a fairly long time, it just never stuck to her as a negative because I think it's a small part of her prolific amount of output, and you'd always spiral into "plagiarism or homage?" debates when it was brought up

She has numerous cases of it far more obvious than the Metal Gear Solid theme, though.

It feels like it's the kind of thing where it's more or less tolerated when it's just home country made-in-japan consumtion but when it gets international attention people start to pick up on the influences.
If Gundam hadn't crashed and burned on Toonami after the Gundam Wing heyday I'm sure Lucasfilm might have been more than a bit miffed at the "totally legally distinct" soundtrack for F91. Or you've got the Dragon Ball Kai composer getting fired and his career tanked for his plagiarism.

Then again it's not just a Japan thing. Bobby Prince's Doom soundtrack would get sued into oblivion if it was made today.

This line of conversation reminds me of this video where someone pointed out some strong similarities between classic Mario and Zelda music and songs from a variety of different genres.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBNJ5cAxcQ8

I find most of them to be different enough to be distinct, but the Mario Underground theme feels hilariously blatant because of the "duh-nuh duh-nuh duh-nuh" bassline.

my posts are as bad the Current Releases review of Gone Girl

kanno is not even remotely unique in quantity or closeness of borrowed segments when it comes to working composers, this may come as a shock but when you literally have to come up with music for a living and your projects are on the scope of "create a whole-rear end soundtrack for a 26-52 episode television series," the occasional bit of copying is going to happen just as a result of how the game is played, and for every example you list of yoko kanno doing it you could find a dozen examples of other composers at her tier doing the exact same poo poo. She only gets called out for it because anime fans in particular like to bring her up as a major example of music talent in anime, so she gets a lot of backlash.

Also, I thought it was Sideways who brought this up, but there's also the point of realism of "your film score is usually a work for hire and most of the rights to it belong to the studio. Do you really want to create your magnum opus for a movie, only to have to obtain permission from them to play it anywhere?"

Film scores are functional in nature and composers have a pretty good reason to not use their grand masterpiece ideas for them.

Stink Bomb is silly and fun but I think you're selling Cannon Fodder short. It's a pretty grim piece that plays like a twisted slice of life excerpt except it's set in a military state with a siege mentality.

That's fair - I haven't seen Stink Bomb or Cannon Fodder since literally the late 90's so it deserves fresh eyes. The animation was striking on that one from what I recall at least. I have a DVD of Memories somewhere and will keep my order ready to see it on Blu Ray too.

One thing I really love is they spend the entire story creating this subtext that it's probably all just propaganda to keep people under the thumb of the nobility, and nothing's actually out there in the wasteland.

And then the counterattack starts, right at the end...

If it was only the main chorus that would be one thing but when it goes into the bridge and follows the same progression as Winter Road it's beyond a shadow of a doubt. Kojima wasn't even aware that it had been plagiarized until he was confronted with the two side by side and he straight up said "they're the same."

Still not the worst. The really lovely plagiarism scandals are where they'll plagiarize and it sounds worse than the original. I know that's subjective because I think the MGS theme and Winter Road both sound fantastic, but the worst for me is still Tyler Bates ripping off Elliott Goldenthal's Titus Andronicus soundtrack for 300.

Like it's not even a contest here, Goldenthal's original blows Bates's ripoff out of the water.
