An uncountable number, to be sure.

Some news regarding the Andrew Brown murder. We learned yesterday that the body cam footage won't be released, but someone discovered what is supposedly a street view video of the incident.

Wrapped in NWS tags just in case, but you can't see anything graphic. The video shows the pickup turning onto the road where Brown was sitting in his car in his driveway, then the cops getting out.

The video is 7 minutes long, but everything happens in the first 40 seconds. After that is cops cordoning off the road and EMTs arriving.

:nws: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NMNHMQgWfI :nws:

What is crazy to me is the police response here. Remember, cops were approaching Brown to serve a warrant. They came driving up in a pickup, with cops in the back in full swat gear. The truck stops at the end of the driveway, everyone jumps out. You hear shouting as the cops approach, then what sounds like a gunshot and a yell together (at 35 seconds).

5 seconds between getting out of the truck and shots fired. This was a literal loving hit.

What in the flying gently caress. Why are there like 8 guys loaded in the back of a pickup to serve a warrant if the goal wasn't to kill the guy?

Christ. Demilitarize the police. poo poo, take away their guns entirely, you generally shouldn't be in a spot where you need to use lethal force over non-lethal means (taser, pepper spray, etc)

This is an absurd amount of force to serve a warrant. Was this guy even a violent threat? What is he that requires that much firepower: the loving Incredible Hulk?

This poo poo is absolutely insane and everyone of the officers involved need to be held and questioned immediately

I'm not sure that he has a specific target in mind, but I'm sure he would be fine if inflation ran hot for a few years. There was an interesting retrospective on his intellectual evolution by Adam Tooze in the London Review of books https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v43/n08/adam-tooze/the-gatekeeper recently, so I guess some set of people care about him. Certainly Biden's econ appointments are closer to Krugman's views than Obama's cabinet was, and I think you can get some idea from the debate on the Biden stimulus that Summers and Krugman had https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbZ3_LZxs54 .

The actions of police actually make a lot more sense when you consider the police unions as organized crime syndicates that are shaking down the government for "protection" against other organized crime. The ways they act are pretty consistent with this.

That's actually how most organized crime gets started throughout history, as rented or volunteer neighborhood "law" enforcement.

Krugman is getting listened to a pretty good amount these days - the summers wing has been very discredited. The people currently in charge at the Fed have absorbed a lot of the "you were overemphasizing inflation and underestimating employment as a concern" and adjusted policy as a result.

We can actually put some numbers to this, should you want them.

The CPI rent index went from 188 twenty years ago to 346 for the most recent month available. That works out to an average increase of 3.1% a year, which seems pretty reasonable? Worse on the coasts and urban areas, most likely, with inland rents likely pretty flat.

Also, the whole "just listen to orders from the police" prove they don't work, so it's no surprise that people try to run or drive away - it's for their drat lives.

It's one of those weird cases where Thomas using constitutional literalism to take the law completely literally with no context ends up at a good resolution.

Thomas sided with him because the law says "the government must send a notice" and they sent two notices.

I mean it is a tax increase.
Their income over whatever threshold that is currently subject to 37% or whatever the top rate is would then be subject to 39.6%, which is the definition of a tax increase.

He's not going to be taking 40% of the whole $400,000, sure, but it is definitely going to be more in taxes then they're paying now.

You recall incorrectly. The threat of court packing backfired spectacularly for FDR, his Congressional majority, and his agenda. It was probably the weakest point of his presidency.

What happened was that in the next few years multiple justices died or retired, so soon enough the court was mostly FDR appointees and supporters.

Not saying this is an argument against pressure on the court today. Only pointing out that the popular myth of FDR cowing the court into submission is just that.
