I think the joke is this: if you are a person who is fully bought into conspiracy theories being the real truth, then someone claiming science to be truth would look like a total failure. Like an inverse of "Jesus, take the wheel". Or maybe the real joke is that we're firing neurons over it at all. Also yeah, the salt is unreal.

The joke, without reading it, is obviously that the left talks about science when it comes to global warming. It's hard to rile up a ton of outrage about Joe so far, especially given the last 4 years of the Twitterer in Chief and his daily mountain of lies, bullshit and self aggrandizement, when even dumb rednecks can see tangible benefits and realize there's more to get worked about than Dr. Suess or some poo poo. I think (most) people feel relief at not having to parse and report on the daily TrumpTweet bullshit. I know I do. It was loving exhausting. Worse, it was EMBARRASSING. Shameful. ... Also, I'm a little surprised at just how much of a vacuum Rush Limbaugh left in his wake. Here in the belly of the beast, it's almost palpable how the regurgitation of The Talking Points have ceased in the crossfire of lunchroom conversations. Rush really did set the table and TOLD people what to think, especially for poo poo that required some thought to paint conservatives in a way that wasn't ghoulish. My conservative co-workers were usually quiet the day after something about Gulianni or Trump or whoever made the rounds but were ALWAYS parroting the Limbaugh Line once he managed to frame poo poo for them. I could always tell what he touched upon without even listening to his show just by listening to people bitch or justify something terrible. Now we just have a bunch of Limbaugh wannabes with none of his talent trying to fill a big (fat) void but there's not one who is half as smart or with half the broadcasting skills of Rush and it's already showing. Most of the MAGA's seem to be reduced to making their trucks louder, driving rather aggressively and buying bigger flags to hang on their f150's. They're looking for stuff to be outraged about but none of it is really sticking. Just some nebulous, aimless idea about America dying because we can't make fun of __________'s and ___________'s anymore and all out freedoms being taken away for being asked to wear masks. I guess they're going to seize all the guns any day now. TL/DR: Biden is doing a surprising and objectively good job by just about any measure that makes him hard to pick on. The void Limbaugh left was even bigger and fatter than I would have expected. Conservatives can't make up their minds what they're mad about and it's dividing them

I'm taking a shot in the dark here but I think its one of those instances where conservatives think that liberals see and believe in their own issues with the same blind devotion that conservatives do with their issues. Like when conservatives smugly point out that some Democratic politician did some dumb thing and they're taken aback when you say "yeah gently caress them that was a stupid move" and we don't display the same cult-like devotion and blind loyalty they do toward Trump or whoever. In this case it's their mistaken belief that us liberals blindly devote ourselves to science the way they do religion. They think "huuurrrrr duuuurrr dumb liberal will run into a wall if science tells them to" when science is more akin to "hey it looks like that's a tunnel but lets run some tests first to make sure because maybe our initial hypothesis is wrong and we'll need to re-evaluate". Its part projection and part unable to see the world in anything other than black and white and us vs. them. Its not a funny joke because its a complete misunderstanding of who their opposition is.

I don't even remember what drew me to SA, which thread peaked my interest or whatever, but I quickly discovered a multitude of subforums with people discussing things respectfully and clearly so I bought an account. I remember the linguistics thread helping me out a lot when I got stuck on something for uni, for example. Soon after I discovered how much shitposting happened and loved it even more.
