the best indycar oval race was that fontana death race where like 8 people finished, and the cars could sort of pack race but also they got massive tows that allowed huge slingshots so it wasn't really a 'pack' like you used to see at the terrifying texas races

It also was like an endurance race. It was during the 2000 season’s psychotic horsepower war. Casey Mears (remember him?) finished 4th.

I loved that 2000's race so much. It was spread across 2 days because of rain, and the engines just kept exploding. Gil De Farran won the championship from that race.

Back in the day, the big ovals were endurance races - both from a strategy component but also for the parts, especially engines/transmissions. Michigan, Pocono, 1990s/2000s Fontana, and of course Indianapolis are all endurance tests wrapped around going real fast. So I definitely prefer that to an extent, plus those massive pack races lead to real trouble.

The Phoenix DW12 races sucked because with that much downforce, unless you got the car horribly wrong you could just throw a brick on the throttle and steer it - but then you couldn't do a thing when you were in the wake of another car.

https://speedsport.com/indy/indycar-series/indycar-notes-diversity-is-key-to-success/2/ Can't copy-paste it so here's a screenshot! Roger is shopping around pretty hard it seems like. Looks like NBC is done after this year unless they can pay up or kiss rear end big-time. NBCSN going bye-bye is probably a huge deal here. If they go with ABC/ESPN they're going to need to not go back to the lovely production and booth guys of the recent past. ESPN+ is $6 a month so I guess practice sessions will go there? I bet they'll show races live, at least. If Fox gets it, they'll put practice on FS1/FS2 more than likely. Plus they can pull in more of the NASCAR crowd as more of the seasons will overlap. If there's still a streaming component, that's not just "you can watch the cable channels on the Fox GO app with authentication!!!" I wonder if this will give wiggle room for Indycar to start an OTT service? And for the love of God, get Allen Bestwick to call the races. Maybe Dario in the booth, too?

At this point I don't really care where it ends up as long as I don't have to watch and subscribe to a hundred different goddamn services just to watch all the same poo poo that Nascar has in one place

It's probably too much to ask, but I'd like it to be on a network that actually covers all the key passes, pitstops etc. instead of being in commercial time for half the race.

The Texas race was a lot better when they could run a higher line and keep the cars wheel-to-wheel longer. What's wrong with that new track surface? Edit: or I could have just Googled before posting: "Last year, a resin called PJ1 was applied to the 1.5-mile oval in hopes it would help the NASCAR shows with overtaking but it had an adverse effect on IndyCars as Scott Dixon dominated (leading 157 of 200 laps) in what was primarily a one-groove race. But, in preparation for the May 1-2 doubleheader, TMS president Eddie Gossage and his crew have been working flat out to remove the PJ1 and hopefully restore the kind of side-by-side competition that’s been delivered since 1997." It's a surface put down by NASCAR for extra grip, but it doesn't play well with the rubber of Indycar tires. They pretty much ruined the track for Indycar by doing this. I was optimistic early on, but Texas isn't the same now. Sucks.

Seriously. Gossage was an idiot for that. Indycar should dump Texas and go to Iowa next year instead. Hell, I'd rather see CotA and drop another oval than do some single lane BS at Texas.

Hell yeah O'Ward! Too bad about Sato's bad pit stop, but this race got a little exciting at times. I still say that PJ1 areas have greatly diminished this track's appeal. Just watching people back way out of passes over and over again because they can't run those lanes in this state was frustrating.
