I feel like NFTs are the nadir of lockdown cabin fever. People (a certain class at least) suddenly have a bunch of disposable income from working from home and not going on holiday, and must buy something. Everything is the next GME. It’s pretty gross on a fundamental level.

Someone on a FB group I’m on commented that he’d just bought a NFT of a (bad) painting of Elon Musk. I went down the rabbit hole and it turns out he gets the physical painting anyway. So, as far as I can make out, he’s paying however much extra for the world to know that he owns it?

A friend of mine is heavily into crypto as of about a month or two ago. He endlessly consumes YT content that reinforces his beliefs that it’s the next big thing / already the thing, and as far as I can make out doesn’t even check to see whether the people pushing this stuff have a vested interest in it being pumped (of course they do).

He was telling me about some pump and dump platform new business idea support platform (Launchpad?) which apparently is like a Kickstarter for cryptos - as if they weren’t mad enough on their own. The premise is that you stick a load of money in to this service and are given the opportunity to buy these coins/tokens early at a “knock down price”, with the expectation that it will Moon(tm) and bring untold riches. When I said that this whole thing was built on the foundation of greater fool theory he just dismissed my criticism out of hand.

Apparently I just don’t get how altcoin pump and dumps are actually a sign of a healthy financial system.

Semantically, "you" is both singular and plural, though syntactically it is always plural. It always takes a verb form that originally marked the word as plural.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

One more thing that doesn't add up for me about tether -- so 500 million tether were issued to company ABC after they gave tether an IOU for the same amount in USD, and then ABC takes those 500 million tether and buys up bitcoin which keeps the price of bitcoin high. Now those 500 million tether are in the hands of everyone who sold their bitcoins to ABC. A lot of those sellers probably sold so they could cash out, and maybe some others wanted to buy into a different crypto and are using tether to facilitate this, but are there other people who just wanted to hold tether? When tether completely implodes who are the people that are going to lose everything? Who is actually holding tether?
The ostensible use case for Tether is people who want the safety of dollars but don't want the hassle of KYC/AML. Some of those people are sketchy off-share exchanges without banking relationships and others are random crypto traders. The traders do crypto-tether trades and think it's as safe as cashing out to dollars until they're ready to do more trades.

The bigger question is who are the people who have supposedly given Bitfinex 50 billion dollars in exchange for...nothing? They are not generating any ROI!

Well, yeah, that's what doesn't add up for me. From what I understand the people/companies being issued the tether are then buying up bitcoins with them (keeping price of bitcoin inflated). What I can't figure out is who is selling their bitcoins for tether to facilitate that. Presumably there's 50 billion tether out there that is held by "someone". As you point out, that 50 billion is literally doing nothing for the people holding it. Even if you could rely on tether always being 1:1 with USD, you get no benefit from holding it so who are these people parking 50 billion dollars into tether?

Moo!
Made 5k (pre-tax) on BTC in 3 months risking up to 35k at a time. Swing trading - way too much anxiety — all was done with full knowledge (I’m dumb) that one day the house of cards will fall.
Sold it all at 58.3k Friday night and pulled the cash back to checking.
I dodged a bullet, glad I’m back in dirty fiat. Time to find something boring to invest in. Muni bonds? Beanie babies? Gold?

For as much as the coiners here and on reddit say it, I've never regretted not touching the poop, and I've been watching/mocking for at least 8 years now. I had some non-tax advantaged money in the S&P500 up until last year and now that pool of money is probably just going into the mortgage. This is, at its core, a very privileged statement, but: I don't want to become rich, and if I did become rich, I would want it to be because I actually did something that made the world better, not just because of shuffling money around in a casino. There is something fundamentally wrong with you if your goal is to be rich, rather than to do interesting and useful things and possibly make money as a consequence. The very fact that you come in here and tell us that we could have gotten rich off this stupid idea nad expect that to change our minds shows your moral bankruptcy.

Launch pad and launch pool are like a newer version of icos. 90% are a bust, 5% are bullshit and 5% could be real. Of that 5% real, half will still go bust and you're still getting worse rates than private raises, which get in before launchpad.

You could say this about getting in on the ground floor in pretty much any MLM/Ponzi scheme that drew in a lot of investment. A lot of people got rich investing in OneCoin as well, which was an outright Ponzi scheme using all the crypto buzzwords. Far more people lost everything they put in. Some gamblers will make big gains in volatile, speculative markets like cryptocurrency, that doesn't mean these markets are a smart place to put money. Without the benefit of hindsight the crypto market is in the same investment asset class as scratch off tickets.

Destroying as in physically wrecking it, or just wasting a colossal amount of space for a return period that will outstrip the amount of time you are expecting to keep the drive for in the first place?
