First cassette was ZZ Top's Eliminator that eventually melted because I left it in the car behind the back seat in the summer, which now that I type out is a very texan story.

my embarrassing confession is that my first cd was the soundtrack to jurassic park

it sounded loving amazing, like it was such a good platform for showing why cds were good

i mean mine where cds from the discount bin at the grocery store when portable players were becoming popular and they're all classical piano pieces and beethoven

but they do sound amazing, and the beethoven one still works 24 years later. its impressive since its mildly beat up from being in a portable player with no skip protection and caseless for over a decade

i just reripped it last week and have been listening to it occasionally

my first mp3 was kryptonite lol

Literally me too, and I'm horrified to imagine a world in which two people chose to do that. I usually lie and say my second cd (dark side of the moon) instead.

big flashbacks to when suburban households (including mine) got their first ~~~~ CD PLAYER ~~~~ in like 1990 and it was $400 and hooked up to dad's stereo and he'd yell at you if you used it, which was difficult because dad spent all the budget on the CD player so all the family had was a stack of like six of the shittiest public domain classical and jazz standard compilations the $4.99 bin at Best Buy had

oh, dude. we didn’t have a cd player that early on but there was 100% a dad stereo that I wasn’t allowed to touch. especially the eq sliders.

this one time late at night growing up, i put on my headphones to listen to music, and they were nice so they had a pretty good bass response. kinda high listening to tunes, and then dad knocks "what the heck is going on here?" i had forgotten to switch it over to phones so i was just blasting music at like 1am to the whole house

Found some wild mixtapes that my dad passed on to me when I had my first car. First album I bought was Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise on cassette tape.

first CD was Flood by TMBG

first pirated video game was C&C Red Alert, downloaded from America Online in like 50 forwarded email attachments

either way i gave up on mp3s in '98 when nullsoft started using an actual fraunhofer decoder, making winamp play back my painfully downloaded mp3's accurately and therefore apparently badly. as far as i am concerned no music not filtered through justin frankels spaghetti code is worth listening to.

which way to the MACHINES?
tape: the soundtrack to the Jim Carrey classic, The Mask
CD: the soundtrack to the Val Kilmer classic, Batman Forever (think I also got the soundtrack to the Power Rangers movie around the same time)
game: probably like Final Fantasy NES and SNES roms or like Quake, because I could get them on dial-up. I tried to get my buddy to pirate like Resident Evil 3 PC at some point but it never actually worked.
MP3: I don't remember a specific one but I remember listening to a steady rotation of
Creed - Higher
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen - Another One Bites The Dust
Eminem - The Real Slim Shady or whatever that song is called
movie: honest to god I think it was Kung Pow Enter The Fist. I tried to burn it to VCD and had a terrible codec so the colors were always getting hosed up.

edit: oh and streaming? Blink-182's interactive website had realplayer embeds. gently caress yaaaaaaaaaa
