Maelstrom on Monarch does pretty crazy damage if anything gets in your face or you gently caress up and rush into steal a battery while there are other titans around.

This weekend I had 4 other friends play this who'd never played it when it was new, it was weird. You can definitely see the frustration though of a new player getting into this having virtually naff all unlocked on weapons and titans which is lame. Being stuck with no weapon attachments (quicker reload, ADS etc) and missing most of your titan kit honestly has to loving suck when there's so many players out there with it already. It's all pretty hectic and fast too and one of my friends decided that after getting destroyed almost immediately after spawn several times that he'd had enough. Can't say I don't blame him.

*edit: one friend actually listened to me though and found the joy of a non-ADS'd, tap-fired Alternator which he was using liberally to cut pilots down. Respect.

Yeah, a titanfall3 would be much improved by not making you unlock gameplay elements, let new players just pick up and play similar to apex, don't make people choose which of the many time vampires they are going to grind unlocks for.

monarch is great in frontier defence too - basically invincible... can sit inside a group of enemy titans and tank/destroy them with all the shield you can restore + iframe tank with energy thief.

The last couple games of Titanfall 2 i played was just vets making GBS threads on people and my team being perpetually 2 players down while it desperately struggled to keep us topped up with a full team, so I just turned the game off and went back to playing literally anything else. I feel like I understand why this game never keeps new players.

This is why I always jump into any multiplayer game I'm interested in day 1. Battlefield 1 was really fun in the first few months before metas established, the player count still has a healthy composition of newbies versus vets, and people are still learning maps.

Don't wait for a multiplayer game to go on sale. Get it asap and I bet you'll play it longer than when it's half off and you quit earlier because people are stomping often.

Idk early days of TF2 some stuff was pretty broken which could be just as frustrating (if I remember right on PC at least tone and ion were just savaging everything else, r97 did too but not as many people used it). I dunno if I'm a good judge though, I had an easy time transitioning to this game from counter strike

What a horrible thread to have a post.
I love Titanfall 2 but the initial meta was absolutely dire. Hope you like getting absolutely turbo-hosed by Tone and one-shot by Hemlocks (which on console had near aimbot levels of recoil compensation and aim assist)!

Phase shift was absolutely OP before they nerfed it too. You could go full Nightcrawler on Titans.

R97 was incredible pre-nerf as well, much lower recoil if I remember right. And the most hated gun used to be the devotion. Watch vaughny's maximum skills video to get an idea of how unbalanced it used to be.

Every time balance comes up I'll ring that same bell: Titanfall 1 had a good idea with mechanics that allow less skilled folks to contribute. From the mass number of grunts that you could go full stealth suppressor and farm, to the smart pistol putting more focus on movement than shooting aim, to most weapons behaving at shorter ranges and wilder while wallrunning. Slide hopping is really cool tech that lets you move a lot more but is also black magic to new folks that should be a more limited loadout thing.

First Titanfall felt like it had much less drastic a skill gap between new folks and turbo pros. Understandably when asking the turbo pros about this they pressured away from that in 2.

I've been doing a pretty healthy amount of Frontier defense since the weekend and the XP gain is a loving trickle. The same goes for any XP earned as a pilot and your Credits. The credits are a great idea, yeah, spend them to have permanent unlocks for when you Regen... except a lot of poo poo is so expensive you're probably going to unlock what you want before you get enough credits.

They honestly need to tone all of that stuff down for a sequel and just do the Apex thing by giving us a bunch of cosmetics to purchase. They did it for a bit...

Agreed, I played that mode a bunch and the leveling was super slow. I think that's more a fundamental problem with how the leveling system is built around merits. In theory it's supposed to encourage you to experiment and use everything a little bit, just like the first game - but the merit leveling progress for titans and weapons quickly outpace how many merits you're earning per match, unless you're a super-good player. And the process is largely hidden - unlike the original game where the XP gains were far more transparent and you could browse and track all the challenges that would give you big XP rewards. Removing/hiding that in TF2 was a step back, IMO.

For a while they were doing pretty frequent double xp events and those made leveling titans in FD feel way better. Honestly that should be the normal rate.

Had my first and only experience with a toxic player in the five years since this game came out. He got on VOIP and started telling people in his team they were trash and to go back to Call of Duty. He got clowned on pretty hard but it was like pretty unchill in a game that usually has people wishing each other a good match at the start of each round.

I had an FD round last night where the other three players picked Legion, Legion, and Scorch on a map where you need like 2 roamers to deal with all the damned mortar and nukes titans.

We wiped a wave and I had to be the one to speak up in chat telling them to each pick a lane and stick with it while the speedier Monarch darts around to support them.

I got semi-accused of insisting everyone except me play smart, and it was...no, you guys are just slow, focus a lane each and let me support you if you're getting slammed.

To their credit, they tried it, and we won.

Tone is super easy to use, I sometimes go back to him when I don't really want to deal with running around everywhere trying to ambush people as Scorch. Speaking of Tone, what's the thread consensus on his kits? I quite liked the second ping on the pulse echo kit simply because sometimes it's impossible to hit all the titans stacked up more than once each. Enhanced tracker rounds ping twice for critical hits but again you have to hit each at least twice rather than just get a single hit and two pings for free with the pulse echo.

Ion is great, give that one a shot. If you're just using the gun a bunch you'll run out of power for utilities quick, but concentrate on your utility (laser pilots and weak spots on titans, vortex missiles back at tone, tripwire and electric smoke ronins) and power will be less of a concern I've found. I'm more of a scorch main, but ion was my favorite for a while.

I go with pulse echo. Enhanced rounds are less reliable imo because it can be stopped by vortex shields etc since its a regular bullet. Double pulse you can get two pings on like the entire team when they're bunched up and they cant stop it.

They really should have had it so Tone could dummy fire his rockets instead of NEEDING a full lockon, just put it on a cooldown that resets if you get a full lockon

the 40mm cannon that is Tone's primary has always been a great jack-of-all-trades weapon even in titanfall 1. Triple threat, plasma cannon, and rockets were viable in some situations but there was really nothing the 40mm was bad at.

based on the video referenced earlier, I think they had it that way at launch and it was removed because it was super easy to lob missiles up and then lock on and arc them around a shield.

I think it’s generally a more casual vibe than most games in the past five or so years because it’s not trying to be an esport. Even like overwatch is way more toxic. No ranked mode helps but also this game is just fun to play to point where I honestly don’t mind when I lose if I did something cool in the match. It’s so hectic too, feels like playing Mario kart or something where you just roll with it.

I agree with the poster who said they miss the grunts: TF1 made me feel like I was doing so much more because canon-fodder was everywhere. It made combat feel like the big 64v64 maps from games like BF2, but with a tenth of the players.

From memory I believe the only way to do that is to load up the frontier defence multiplayer bit from the main menu at which point it'll give you the difficulty options on the lower left portion of the screen. You can highlight more than one difficulty and it'll search and slot you into a game.

Yeah, the lack of esport-style competition and the balancing that accompanies it are definitely working in the game's favor, but there are also other things it has going:

-You get back into the action quickly. If you die, then most of the time you can just tap the spacebar and be back in the action in a few seconds. You don't have to watch a countdown timer, then take a long trip to get back to the action and get your rear end kicked because all your healers or dead like in Overwatch. Or you don't get blatted and have to sit a round out like in Siege.

-No classes. I got real salty in Overwatch because my top two heroes were Mercy and Lucio. My top character in TF2 is Medic. I hate being healer, but I just don't want to lose. And when I'm stuck playing characters I don't like because the people playing fun characters suck so much at them, I get frustrated. In Titanfall, I have my gun and my robot.

-You find a match and you just start playing. You don't have to go through tons of pre-screens (loving Quake Champions was the worst about this btw) or inter-match screens. You find a match, you load, and you get to see a sweet dropship sequence.

-Losing isn't the end. I think it can cool some players down to have the dropship escape to make it feel like you did something successful.

-Progression is forgiving and rewards you for doing well. I'm getting sick of progression systems that are 100+ levels, take you several wins per level, and lock out useful, interesting, or even necessary items behind bullshit challenges or bad grind. You can blast out a few levels in Titanfall 2 if you have a good match. You can get any interesting equipment after a few wins. You're not stuck grinding out low-level garbage for a week or two. It's easy for a new player to get in and get some cool stuff.

The first one is one of the reasons why I love this game so much. I still go back and launch Quake or Unreal Tournament because it's fun to just actually play a game.

Back when you could give him 2 boosts via the turbo engine kit it was a lot more fun for you and a lot more terrifying for other titans on the receiving end of a Scorch dashing with a flame shield extended. Of all the titans to get nerfed in that way, the two fuckin' slowest??
