But I do like hearing podcast ads when they are trying to recommend something enjoyable to me. There’s a million podcasts out there and I constantly am searching for new ones. I work in a science lab and we always want a podcast to listen to as we do monotonous, repetitive work in a clean room. Because of the vent hoods and air purifiers, a lot of podcasts just don’t work, so we are always trying new ones. It would be nice if ads would, like, inform me about the content of a podcast and the actual sense of humor of the participants, and not just be a bad morning zoo crew ad.

Huh, turns out that you can still actually download all the Tides episodes directly from the Wondery website: https://wondery.com/shows/tides-of-history/ You have to do it manually, one by one, and then of course they're not in your podcasts app, but you can at least hear them. Honestly, for me the biggest bummer about modern podcasting is that the heady 1.0 communal indie days are long gone, and the gatekeeping suits have all moved in. Feels like a Mike Duncan or even a Dan Carlin would struggle to actually get off the ground these days without joining a big network, and that of course puts the know-it-all execs, MBAs, and techbros back in charge.

I don't enjoy hearing any ad ever, period. No matter how relevant it is to me. If I want podcast suggestions I can do a whole lot better than listening to whatever random nonsense they're trying to push on me this week.

There are podcast apps that let you automatically fast forward a set amount of time at the beginning of every episode. Of course tides of history circumvents that by having a little podcast intro, followed by ads, so you lose out on some content if you do it. Tides of history also has some of the worst ads. Just hit that forward button 1-5 times depending on podcast, no big deal. I think in today’s world someone like Carlin might struggle to get off the ground, but someone like Duncan would be fine. History of Rome stands on its own.

I think it might be the other way around. Neither one had any credentials or serious education in history when they started, but Carlin was at least radio trained with a bombastic personality. Duncan's early episodes were pretty rough, and I think he'd have a harder time standing out in a field crowded with more credentialed people these days.

I don't listen to many podcast ad rolls anymore, but when I do I'm happy when it's something normal. Like where to go for gambling in my state or ethical, pay-what-you-want porn sites. A Gene Wolfe podcast I listen to does fake ads, and even puts in their episode descriptions "brought to you by (gag product)". History related: to bandwagon the recs, History of Philosophy without any gaps will fill a bunch of your time and is fairly plain in its delivery. Can't go wrong with China History Podcast either.

Wyman had some truly dire ad reads in the early days of Tides / Fall of Rome, or at least dire in comparison to the quality of said shows. Maybe his book will sell enough copies that he can go independent again

Our Fake History is pretty good for what I would say are beginning-to-moderate in depth overviews of particular topics that you might not know about, and will set you up for looking into more on your own recently. He just did a two-parter on the history of the Ethiopian claims to own the Ark of the Covenant that was used to discuss the history of Ethiopia, its particular type of Christianity, the Kebra Negast, its relation with other Christian and Muslim powers, etc.

I was into Our Fake History until he started doing subjects that either didn't have much of a story, or was obviously false like "did aliens build the pyramids." I think he's trying to speak to a younger audience and disprove some of the more dangerous conspiracy theories out there, which is part and parcel with the pod title and not a bad thing at all, but I get that stuff well enough from my more in depth pods. His podcasting style is also like he's always stretching for time. Between the intro, his second intro, the ads, his slow and deliberate delivery method, and the patreon shill, there's like 15-20 minutes of podcast in every episode. /complaining over. Our Fake History is a good pod. I might go back to it now that a certain gaming podcast is ending today and I'll need another two hours of listening filled.

I stopped listening a while ago cause I noticed I'm like 15 minutes into the episode and he still hasn't even started the actual story yet. I occasionally still grab some here and there if the topic is very interesting to me (This newest one on the Ark has always been an interesting topic). It is still a worth while podcast to listen to

They take a bit lighter approach to Chinese history while still managing to cover the bases of whatever topic they're talking about. I've started listening to the last several episodes after, of all things, seeing a banner ad it for it here, and found it worthwhile. Apparently at least one (maybe both?) of the hosts are goons - any podcast that uses this graphic for their episode on the kidnapping of Sun Yat-Sen definitely has some goon stink on them:

This whole week has got me thinking about how long some people have been doing this. Like how long has Carlin been making these, lol? Feels like he's been doing it for thirty years. CHP, Philosophy and History of English are all over or near the 10-year mark, too. Behind the Bastards has only been going for three but Robert sounds burned out with all the work, activism, being part of the American political discourse, and also spending several hours a week reading and writing about literally the worst people in the world. That dude is just gonna run off into the woods one day and his producer is going to be like

After listening to the Lions Led By Donkeys series about the Iran-Iraq war I wished that Mike would do a Revolutions series about the Iranian Revolution (although I'd bet that would be pretty far outside his wheelhouse skills-wise)?

The Fall of Civilizations podcast is 100% my jam and I'm swallowing it whole. The Greenland Vikings episode was fantastic. I like the content of the British History podcast but so far I'm bouncing off the tone. Someone noted that it in some way improves after a few episodes: does this mean fewer lame jokes and fluffy editorial asides?
