we monitor many frequencies. we listen always. came a voice, out of the babel of tongues, speaking to us. it played us a mighty dub.

:swoon:

also, drat, james burke is really old. i hope whatever they make, they can keep the pacing and production values of the original connections/the day the universe changed

I finally watched Tenet since it's on HBO now and I thought it was pretty good. Unlike Interstellar it doesn't feel like it thinks it's super profound or anything, and it's just fun to watch without worrying too much about whether it actually makes sense or anything.

yeah it’s pretty boring. one of the main action parts involves a car’s windshield icing up, but like, really fast

i liked interstellar's attempt to portray real hard sci-fi stuff like time dilation and our best idea of what a black hole really looks like.

i hated that the big reveal at the end was "love is something you can feel no matter how far you are separated in time or space, so matthew mcconaughey can use the power of love to break through dimensional barriers and literally travel through time"

like uhhh if we're really doing this stupid thing about feelings being omnipresent and eternal and that being the secret to time travel, how about ones other than love? my intense disgust for richard stallman persists forever across the universe. sign me up for the department of temporal investigations

that's not exactly what happened but what did happen is almost as dumb

the place he finds himself in after entering the black hole was constructed by hyper-advanced humans from the future who had mastered time and space. they built it for the express purpose of letting him communicate with his daughter at that exact moment. they can do this because he did communicate with her and the data he sent her via watch tapping morse code formed the basis of gravity superscience in the future. they were also the "aliens" responsible for the original wormhole spontaneously opening and kicking off the whole exploration project to begin with. it's a time loop

yeah interstellar was the best attempt at hard scifi i've seen

and then all those words you said

i saw that in a theater which is infuriating due to the sound mixing

i hate basically every movie nolan makes because you get pounded for every explosion and can't make out the dialogue

but matt damon's character in interstellar is choice

it involves an explosion

everything about the time dilation planet and what happened there was absurd. that close to the black hole the time dilation effects would practically be visible to humans on the surface, and even then to make the decision to land you'd have to ignore the multiple planet-spanning tsunamis that should have been visible via telescope. also the signal would have been so redshifted that there's no way multiple cosmologists wouldn't have realized exactly what had happened on the surface (also was the beacon not timestamped??). also if they couldn't transmit out to the other planets/relay station from orbit around Gargantua why could the beacon on the planet transmit to the ship when they'd just come out of the wormhole

(not to mention that it would have been baked raw from radiation)

it doesn't really but they give the one woman scientist a soliloquy about how "actually love is basically the same as gravity so we should go to this one planet where my bf is due to the fact that I want him to be alive which counts as scientific evidence (due to love being gravity)"

the thing that annoys the poo poo out of me more than anything else about interstellar is not the "love is a natural force" or whatever, but the fact that they decided to go to the time dilation water world knowing they'd lose years of time exploring a world that had almost no chance of being viable instead of going to the terrestrial planet that anne hatheway's boyfriend was on for no reason.
