the manga about some people going back and forth from a fantasy world to film low budget porn movies is surprisingly tasteful.

Eizouken is incredible. I’d recommend it to just about anyone but it’s a must-watch for anyone who wants to get into animation

I was trawling on Amazon Prime video looking for old anime and gave Dallos a shot, so imagine my surprise that it's not just the first OVA produced in the 80s and one of Mamoru Oshii's earlier works, but it's also heavily inspired by The Battle of Algiers. I wouldn't exactly call it a great anime, but it's a really interesting watch. Particularly how true to life all of the character motivations and their political interests play out. It's a great artifact of the period of anime where productions could be overtly left wing sympathetic.

I thought invincible was pretty good, I forgive the shonky animation just because it looks like a DBZ movie in the last episode. I think the narrative is fine, Marks a likeable idiot boy. OmniMan is clearly a massive piece of poo poo and a veritable avatar of toxic masculinity. I'll watch season 2 and hope that they clean up the directing a bit.

what do people like about re:zero, i genuinely do not get it. it feels like a really directionless torture fest. the main character just has a crying screaming meltdown every episode and everyone has to treat him like a baby when he's having a meltdown in the hopes that he pulls it together. it's nails on chalkboard to me

Raiad posted:being a cspam poster you'd think that would resonate somehow the first handful of episodes had me hooked, the animation quality was sick, there were some surprising moments and i wasn't sure where it was going. then it slowly evolved into a bizarre quasi-harem anime where the main character has an existential meltdown multiple times an arc and seems to really arbitrarily decide when to use his sweet ground-hog-day powers

For one thing it's something of a deconstruction of the normal Isekai formula -- well, sort of anyway. Typically the main character ends up possessing some special power that makes incredibly powerful as some kind of wish-fulfillment. Subaru's ability is mostly just allows him to suffer. Also whereas in another series Subaru would be the one saving the day in the end, typically in Re:Zero it's the other, stronger, characters actually doing the heavy lifting and Subaru mostly just facilitating it. He's also clearly a goon so watching his tribulations serves as a sort of self-flagellation. In this way Subaru also functions as a Christ figure as I will demonstr

I don't know if you caught this, but it's implied that using his power is a very unpleasant process.

I know someone made this for season 1 and I haven't watched it yet, but I love the idea of a "successful loop" cut of the series that cuts out everything from the loops where he dies. He must seem so goddamn manic-depressive.

i think one of the maddening aspects is that he really hasnt developed at all as the show has gone on. his personality hasn't cracked at all despite the circumstances. he just waffles between "im making 4th wall-ish pun jokes and i ramble" bits, and "im screaming and im crying oh god why me oh god oh poo poo", and everyone treats him like he's amazing Just Because. he's had like 5 rounds of "i AM a good and strong person, i DO have self confidence!!" moments at his lowest points, but then he goes through it all over again in 10 episodes.

invincible did really good by me by having the villain be a well written & despicable piece of poo poo, and not doing the "oh gently caress we made the villain Too Cool on accident" whoopsie that a lot of superhero narratives seem to do.
