Not sure if I mentioned it here, but my neighborhood got electric buses last year and it's such a huge difference in noise. The labored diesel pulling away uphill must have lowered house prices near the bus stops. Now it's nice and quiet.

We used to drive a VW microbus, and I had trouble getting that fucker up to 60MPH on a flat highway with a tailwind. I am looking forward to the absurdity of how much a bus-mounted MEB platform outperforms the gas one.

I mean, "is able to get up to 60MPH" is going to be enough. Doing it in under 20 seconds will just be riotously funny to me after being passed by mopeds.

Right? I really wish there would be a mass market Tesla roadster. Convertible, two door. Range similar to model 3/Y and a slower 0-60. Instead it's some halo car that won't be out for a few years, and costs 250k.

You just had to be an early adopter, my Roadster cost less than my Model X brand new and is definitely slower than the X or the 3. Range was 210 new which I guess doesn't stack up that great.

Because the market for convertibles is really small and no one is going to spend precious development dollars on that instead of things that people will buy in large quantities like crossovers.

Yeah it would pretty much have to be something that you sell at a big premium like the Lucid Air or it will be somewhat difficult to recuperate your development / retooling costs.

In the dozens of business trips I've done to dense cities like LA where the hotel parking was valet-only, I have not even once had to readjust my mirrors back because they never changed them.

Does anyone know the magic password necessary to test drive a Mach-E? I realize I’m in Ohio and this prime “Mustangs without a V8 should be burned with their owners inside” territory, but I would have assumed that capitalism would override some of that and dealers might be willing to entertain the thought of someone paying them $60,000 for an automobile. As it stands, I’ve gotten one “we don’t have any” (despite a premium AWD standard range sitting outside the entrance to their building), one “we only use those for the service department’s courtesy shuttles, you can’t test drive it,” and one complete lack of response.

Honestly it probably wouldn’t end up being my choice, because even though some YouTube types have implied that it’s better-built and possibly even a better SUV overall than the Model Y, the non-Tesla charging infrastructure out here combined with a bad fast charging curve on the Ford would probably conspire to make it an inferior experience as my first EV purchase. I don’t road trip much, but ABRP shows some of the places I go as only having L2 chargers for part of the route, which seems like a bad time for everyone.

I’ve really only been considering EVs seriously for a few months, but is my assumption generally correct that Tesla is still the only viable option for road trips in much of the flyover part of the country? I’m not opposed to Tesla by any means (punchable CEO aside) and I really liked driving the Y, but I wonder if I’m missing something.

Not by 2020 standards, but it was the first pure EV with a range above 200 miles that you could actually buy, meanwhile the mainstream auto industry was like "We'd love to make electric cars, but we can't be bothered to spend that kind of money for the sake of the environment the technology just isn't there yet".

I’m going to try my local dealer tomorrow. I’m tired of beaters (but not the lack of a car payment) - and with the Mach-E having a $10k total rebate here in my state, it’s hard not to consider one.

I would also let you murder someone for one, I don't actually even care what wagon you have. We're waiting for whatever the Space Vizzion becomes, and then someone usually tells me it's not likely to come to America, and then I plug my ears.

I had hopes for Volvo since they at least sell their wagons here, but based on the image they put out, it doesn't look like a wagon is in their immediate future.

I think where I am today is if there isn't good news about the Space Vizzion or something else, I'll just get a V60 PHEV. 22 electric miles will cover my commute, at least.

Yeah, and I just read last night that there's a way to upgrade my daughter's 30kWh batter to a 65kWh one, which would be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying her a new car. Combined with this, it'd be a no-brainer: we could easily run the house overnight with 65kWh.

Not to mention the power reserve. Our apartment's main fuse is 63A @ 230V, or 15 kW, and serves us cooking, showers, etc. You could probably keep a house of cards standing inside a Nissan Leaf while accelerating with 15 kW, it's a tiny amount of power. And yet the 62 kWh battery can easily deliver many times that down to a very low state of charge.
