to be clear, the English translation has already been available in PDF/EPUB for a while now - I read it last year and have occasionally posted excerpts in CSPAM

Just wanna say thanks for this, reading it now and it's fantastic.

you are right that it doesnt dwell on trotsky, it only repeatedly uses his quotes to prove, definitively, what a whiny lil bitch he was

i think the issue here is that i just treat this as a default and completely unremarkable element of serious socialist history at this point

yeah i would say losurdo was pretty even-handed in his approach and connected trotsky to a broader kind of conflict that takes place in every revolution. if you want some really personalized vitriol you can read something like https://www.marxists.org/archive/olgin/1935/trotskyism/index.htm

I am glad that Ferrinus has stopped posting those 10 paragraph essays they normally responds with. It makes it a lot easier to scroll by their posts.

the numerous applebaum sources were quite the surprise

i agree losurdo doesnt really bring true vitriol, he just often makes him look kinda like a weiner:

quote:

In his speech on the drafting of the Constitution of 1936, Stalin criticizes those who want “to prohibit the holding of religious ceremonies” and “deprive clergymen of their right to vote." And again Trotsky intervenes to denounce that unacceptable retreat with respect to the initial project for the definitive liberation of society from the shackles of superstition: “The assault on the heavens has ceased [...]. Worried about their good reputation, the bureaucracy ordered the atheist youths to hand over their weapons and get on with reading. It’s only the start. A regime of ironic neutrality is being slowly instituted with regards to religion."

stalin; cool, calm, reasonable

trotsky: stammering hyperbole, probably crying when he wrote this

e: bonus

quote:

As you can see, it doesn’t make much sense to blame Stalin’s narcissism, as Khrushchev does, for the exalted state that the cult of personality reaches in the USSR after a certain amount of time. In fact, when Kaganovich suggests substituting the term Marxism-Leninism for Marxism-Leninism-Stalinism, the leader to whom that tribute is directed responds: “you want to compare a dick to a guard tower."

My interpretation at this point is that he just gets a perverse pleasure out of disrupting things and a violation from one poster gives him the license to spoil everyone else's good time. It could just be incompetence, but my instincts say 'spite'

you're posting badly on purpose but there's a difference between adults talking to each other, problematically or not, and another person putting them all in the corner like a school teacher. mods and IKs shouldn't get involved when there's not a major conflict disrupting a thread or some kind of logistical problem they need to fix, like moving or renaming a thread

well, thus far there's been a repeated pattern of one person using a slur and getting punished for it and then about five people who otherwise never post here popping out of the woodwork to consume multiple pages of the thread crying about the punishment. this seems, to me, to constitute a conflict disrupting a thread, and one that is obviously not solved by simply reprimanding the repeat instigator

but if somehow the slur ISN'T a big deal while not being able to post for six hours is, that's a bit weird

just don’t use your loving buttons. this is why brutalistmcdonalds was a good moderator. in the flow chart of “is this an appropriate time to use my buttons” the answer is almost always no. a lot of the current moderators compulsively use it when they feel slighted or when it’s just unnecessary, and it makes them disliked

this would be less of a problem if, when they give some long winded multi-paragraph response to feedback, they didn’t pretend like they are taking it seriously. the gap between the rhetoric of “we are trying to improve a community we care about in some serious way” and the reality of how the moderation plays out is very wide
