By the time, the US got everything into position, the Soviets probably could have gotten enough amphibious forces together for at least some footholds in Hokkaido and therefore be part of the post-war settlement, it turned out not be an issue because the Soviets were on the verge of sweeping across Manchuria and both bombs needed to be used ASAP. If the Soviets devoted forces to invading Japan they would be relatively minor but enough to give the US a real headache.

Michelle Bachelet's involvement is what makes me believe there could be something to the Xinjiang stuff, she's been requesting China allow a UN team to interview locals there for years. Why would a Chilean socialist be concerned if the rape and sterilization allegations are actually all CIA propaganda?

This is somewhat of an aside - but whatever happened to the thing where there were claims every Uighur family had to have a Han Chinese man living in their house. I am presuming this was complete nonsense - but its something I remember getting spread around a while back, then people just seemed to stop saying it.

They did have weirdo "Live with a member of another ethnicity" programs that would send Uighurs to Han households and Han to Uighur households. Program was dumb and poorly thought out and a bunch of awful abusive poo poo happened to they introduced safeguards esp regarding womens safety. Program is mostly still dumb and uncomfortable for alot of people. It was never so widespread that most households were doing it, which was always a literally insane claim.
