Ok Like, on a personal level, how does torturing a pig to death make you feel? As a joke but also doesn't that bother you? (detached from the act of killing, Thanks the brutal and cold machine of Capitalism or not)?

Yeah, just fill the role. Example: Trader Joe's masala veggie burgers. Delicious potato patties. They can replace hamburgers because they've got that tender bite and they set up toppings. It's like, okay this is a hamburger. But they don't even try to taste like meat. They're just delicious.

In the time of the Tang dynasty (AD618-907), an official hosted a banquet at which he served convincing replicas of pork and mutton dishes made from vegetables; in the 13th century, diners in the capital of the southern Song dynasty (Linan, now Hangzhou), had a wide choice of meat-free restaurants, including those that specialised in Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. quote:There was no explicit prohibition on meat-eating in early Buddhism. to me, the holy grail of imitation foods is the gluten-free Italian beef, as what's needed to make Italian beef are so completely opposite of what you can get with imitation, vegetable or fungal protein; non-glutinous flour and additives, that if you could manage to make gluten-free bread that holds up like the most glutinous bread and imitation meat that holds up to a deli slicer, you'd be good

Dustcat posted:refusing to participate in doing harm is not a waste of time The veganism itself is not actually preventing harm unless it occurs at such a large scale that it actually results in fewer animals being slaughtered. The harm - the animals being slaughtered and the impact this has the environment, etc - has already occurred by the time you're in the supermarket deciding not to buy some hamburger meat. Whether you choose to buy the meat and eat it is irrelevant. It's basically a weird indirect way to attempt to make farms slaughter fewer animals that almost certainly has zero influence. It would need to happen at a monumentally greater scale for it to result in farms actually lowering their meat production to meet lower demand. A position that just opposes livestock farms makes far more sense. It's true that red meat consumption is unethical as a broad practice, but an individual's choice to eat it or not has zero bearing on its production. Consumer choices are always a dead end and just give the illusion that you're doing something that matters.

Whether you choose to buy the meat and eat it is irrelevant. right, capitalism ensures the effect of individual consumer behavior doesn't transform to the economic scale. crypto is the textbook example: the less energy I individually consume, the more and the cheaper energy for someone else to mine butts, because me lowering consumption doesn't destroy the physical coal plant. in fact, even if the plant gets shut down because the consumers all don't want to use coal, it probably won't be destroyed, which increases the incentive for someone to find a profitable use for this now-unutilized capital. likewise, me choosing not to eat meat doesn't destroy the factory farm. it's still physically there. my consumer choices can't very well change that--only collective or direct action can.
