Ok Like, on a personal level, how does torturing a pig to death make you feel? As a joke but also doesn't that bother you? (detached from the act of killing, Thanks the brutal and cold machine of Capitalism or not)?

You should tell that to the ancient monks who made seitan as a meat substitute.

Yeah and they just call it seitan and say it's made from fermented soy beans or whatever, same as tempeh, they don't give it cutesy names like chick'n and poo poo.

Yeah, just fill the role.

Example: Trader Joe's masala veggie burgers. Delicious potato patties. They can replace hamburgers because they've got that tender bite and they set up toppings. It's like, okay this is a hamburger.

But they don't even try to taste like meat.

They're just delicious.

https://www.economist.com/1843/2018/07/02/china-the-birthplace-of-fake-meat

quote:

Amid this flurry of innovation in the West, its worth remembering that the Chinese have been using plant-based foods to mimic meat for hundreds of years. In the time of the Tang dynasty (AD618-907), an official hosted a banquet at which he served convincing replicas of pork and mutton dishes made from vegetables; in the 13th century, diners in the capital of the southern Song dynasty (Linan, now Hangzhou), had a wide choice of meat-free restaurants, including those that specialised in Buddhist vegetarian cuisine.

The tradition is still alive in contemporary China. In Shanghai, most delicatessens sell rolled-tofu chicken and roast duck made from layered tofu skin. Restaurants offer stir-fried crabmeat, a strikingly convincing simulacrum of the original made from mashed carrot and potato flavoured with rice vinegar and ginger. Elsewhere, Chinese food manufacturers produce a range of imitation meat and seafood products, including slithery chickens feet concocted from konnyaku yam and sharks fin made from translucent strands of bean-thread noodle.

quote:

There was no explicit prohibition on meat-eating in early Buddhism. In the religions early days in India, mendicant monks were expected to eat anything that was put into their begging bowls, as long as they didnt suspect an animal had been slaughtered for their benefit.

Outside Buddhist monasteries, strict ideological vegetarianism (sushi zhuyi) or veganism is rare in China, but a more flexible, intermittent vegetarian eating (sushi) is deeply entrenched in Chinese food culture. Until recently, most Chinese people couldnt afford to eat much meat anyway and, with a few exceptions, dairy foods have been largely absent from Chinese diets.

If the food is seriously delicious, says Song, you dont have to pretend that its meat. But I dont want to judge people for wanting to eat vegetarian food that resembles meat. Trying to broaden acceptance of vegetarian food is like jumping over a high wall: you have to do it in steps, and one step is to give people delicious and familiar dishes that just happen to be vegetarian.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddha_Jumps_Over_the_Wall

quote:

Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, also known as Buddha's Temptation (Chinese: 佛跳牆; pinyin: f tio qing), is a variety of shark fin soup in Fujian cuisine.[1][2] Since its creation during the Qing dynasty (16441912),[1] the dish has been regarded as a Chinese delicacy known for its rich taste,[3] and special manner of cooking.[1] The dish's name is an allusion to the dish's ability to entice the vegetarian Buddhist monks from their temples to partake in the meat-based dish, and implies that even the strictly vegetarian Gautama Buddha would try to jump over a wall to sample it..[4] It is high in protein and calcium.[5]

to me, the holy grail of imitation foods is the gluten-free Italian beef, as what's needed to make Italian beef are so completely opposite of what you can get with imitation, vegetable or fungal protein; non-glutinous flour and additives, that if you could manage to make gluten-free bread that holds up like the most glutinous bread and imitation meat that holds up to a deli slicer, you'd be good

refusing to participate in doing harm is not a waste of time

and imho, doing any moral thing makes you feel better about yourself? always a good idea if you can!

The veganism itself is not actually preventing harm unless it occurs at such a large scale that it actually results in fewer animals being slaughtered. The harm - the animals being slaughtered and the impact this has the environment, etc - has already occurred by the time you're in the supermarket deciding not to buy some hamburger meat. Whether you choose to buy the meat and eat it is irrelevant.

It's basically a weird indirect way to attempt to make farms slaughter fewer animals that almost certainly has zero influence. It would need to happen at a monumentally greater scale for it to result in farms actually lowering their meat production to meet lower demand.

A position that just opposes livestock farms makes far more sense. It's true that red meat consumption is unethical as a broad practice, but an individual's choice to eat it or not has zero bearing on its production. Consumer choices are always a dead end and just give the illusion that you're doing something that matters.

right, capitalism ensures the effect of individual consumer behavior doesn't transform to the economic scale. crypto is the textbook example: the less energy I individually consume, the more and the cheaper energy for someone else to mine butts, because me lowering consumption doesn't destroy the physical coal plant. in fact, even if the plant gets shut down because the consumers all don't want to use coal, it probably won't be destroyed, which increases the incentive for someone to find a profitable use for this now-unutilized capital. likewise, me choosing not to eat meat doesn't destroy the factory farm. it's still physically there. my consumer choices can't very well change that--only collective or direct action can.
