I'm a trans woman and a lesbian. When I came out my parents asked me 'so are you into guys now'. I told them nope, still into women and the idea that I'm 'suddenly' gay was really hard for them to grasp at first. Still kinda is, in one of my conversations with my mom recently me being gay came up and she was like 'wait, you're not gay'. Had to walk her through the motions and explain that me being a woman who wants to date other women means i'm a lesbian.

The easiest way I could get my mother to accept it was by telling her 'wouldn't it be weirder if I suddenly started dating men after all this time' and that made sense to her. They are very supportive but they are really having trouble wrapping their heads around .. well everything do with the whole trans thing.

(and tbf, a lot of cis people do)

The only trans people I know IRL I met after their transition so that's always been who they are to me, so I can't directly relate to what your parents are going through. I'm glad your parents were accepting even if it took a minute to come to grasps with it.

Been a while since I've read Evanovich (she became so formulaic that I got halfway through one book before realising I'd read it before), but isn't Stephanie Plum's thing succeeding through a combination of luck and competent male partners?

Miss Silver series by Patricia Wentworth
Retired 1930s governess who absolutely hated it, solves crimes based around the fact that she can get invited into anyone’s home as a “private enquiry agent” because posh people don’t really notice a shabby retired governess. The person about to be murdered may not be murdered for most of the book. Wentworth really wants you to loving hate either the victim or the murderer.

The Mrs Polifax series by Dorothy Gillman 1950s widow accidentally joins the CIA and becomes a very elderly James Bond, survives on her wits, by easily making friends the CIA/Bad guys don’t know about and because no one is expecting the clumsy elderly widow to be a master spy.

Both written at the time and not modern cosy fiction knockoffs. :)

Edit: my area of study is detective fiction from the 1860s to 1960s so that’s off the top of my head,

She gets help from competent male partners in most of the books, but she usually catches the bad guy at the end by her self.

They are also half romance novels and (I assume) most het women don't want to read a romance novel where the male romantic figure is a useless twit.

I skipped around this series but doesn't she very quickly gently caress then marry the irish mega millionaire genius gangster and he helps her in all kinds of ways? I stopped reading that series because she couldn't even take a walk without him sending a helicopter to help her out, or what the gently caress ever.

I haven't actually read any of them. My mom is the mystery novel fan.

Again it goes into more Romance but the early Laurel K Hamilton Anita Blake books she does everything on her own, but she does have magic powers, but her magic powers don't help her much, it's just what makes her attractive to various vampires and werewolves.

Later books are just straight up porn novels

I find it's easier to find non-romance/porn mysteries in the historical section. I always recomend Amy Stewart's Kopp Sisters series, based on real life cases of Constance Kopp, the US's first female sherrif's deputy, M. Louisa Locke's Gilded San Francisco series, each mystery revolves around an occupation under taken by women at the time (my favorite is about sjop lifters), and Rosalie Knecht's Vera Kelly series, about a CIA operator turned PI working in 60's South America.

I could continue, but won't! (To the relief of everyone, I'm sure!)

e: Also Elizabeth Peters, as is Vicky Bliss. I prefer Peters's less-successful series to the one that was a runaway hit.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable movie that was visually amazing, but I honestly can't decide whether the queer representation in it was respectfully low key and not central to the conflict in support of normalisation, or low-key enough to ensure that Sony could receive accolades for it while having it fly under the radar for most chuds and being able to release it in turbo-homophobic markets via changing a single pronoun in a line of dialogue and changing a button.
