It's way too prominent for that. We'll know either way, though if it failed I don't expect they'll give much information about why. But they have been a lot more open about their space program recently.

It's quite possible that even if it landed successfully they won't say anything about it until they've run system checks and made sure everything is still working. The moon landings were like that. Could be a while before there's an update.

At this point, unclear. If it's working they'll release images in the next day or two most likely.

Eh, go easy. These space missions are good stuff, no matter who's sending them up.

Presuming, of course, that the data is shared with the wider scientific community.

100%. I’m not a tankie, but it’s also good that governments are doing this somewhere. I would have liked it to be like Germany or, better, Cuba, but public space exploration is still good and cool.

Space exploration is good. This rover isn't particularly capable, it's more a proof of concept mission, but that's appropriate for the level China's space program is at. They can use the data from this to build future missions that could accomplish more.

the science is a fig leaf for the dickwaving and always has been on national space programs generally. thats why folks are speculating about settlement next, like the polar dickwaving in the age of polar exploration

the mild territorial claims on antarctica that they have today - which will suddenly turn serious if they find anything except cold lifeless rock down there - were starting to be made in the 30s, so expect territorial claims of similar middling seriousness to be made on mars 20 year after the first person lands there. likely it will keep bein middling, what with the lifeless rock thing and all
