Israel is like the US's bulldog in the Middle East. The US doesn't want a country not aligned with it to get strong enough to challenge it's hegemony in the Middle East. Israel is a constant ally against regional Arab and Muslim powers. Zionists had been a tool of colonial powers since WWI, but Israel didn't become essential to the US until after the Shah was deposed of in Iran. The US was allied with Saddam in the 1980s, but they obviously didn't trust him in the long run. You see this now with Israel being a constant aggressor against Iran. Also Israel gave the US a way to let European Jews leave German concentration camps without actually letting more Jews into the US. Plenty of them got shipped to Israel instead. This happened again in the 1970s and 1980s, when the US and right wing Jewish groups campaigned to let Soviet Jews emigrate. Most Soviet Jews wanted to go to the US, but ended up in Israel.
