Curious if the exoskeleton or what protects from the stinging. They’re definitely right in her face/eyes once replanted, so something must protect the hermit lady.

Could be an adaptation of the sea anemone to recognize a symbiotic species maybe? Or something that specific species of crab have evolved to protect them - maybe a chemical secretion? anyway something even cooler? https://www.weirdiocity.com/2020/06/an-anemones-home-for-hermit-crab.html there are deep sea species of hermit crabs that have symbiosis with anemone... these species of anemone have evolved to create artificial shells for the crab since they're in short supply in the oceans depths, they look so much like the snail shells that hermit crabs normally inhabit that it had scientists fooled for a long time. Turns out this is a great deal for the crab - the anemones are able to adapt and continue to grow the shell so that the crabs never need to find a new one!

Pretty sure that in porcelain crabs, which live entirely in anemones, it's a combination of toxin resistance and the crab producing mucus that prevents the stinging cells from firing. Perhaps hermits have evolved a thicker exoskeleton or something though.

anems also can taste what they're about to sting so if they're like "oh poo poo no that's my bud" they won't pull the trigger

I couldn't find any concrete info on how they're protected either, but I did discover that there are often little amphipods living on the anemones on the crabs. And that the crabs often try to steal anemones from other crabs, either to eat or to put on their own shell.
