He added that a "frail" person who had received both jabs had also been hospitalised with new coronavirus variant.

I get that nothing is 100% but this insane new CDC guidance is explicitly based on the fictitious notion that vaccinated people are invincible to covid and that's how they're billing it: vaccinated = safe. Not safer. Not mostly safe. Not a single word about the durability of vaccine immunity or VoCs that escape immunity. Just vaccinated = safe. Going to be a pretty big shock to folks when meemaw ends up on a vent I think.

So I would say that the only people COVID disproportionately killed were Black people. A few tenths of a percentage is not disproportionate; arguably that's within margin of error. Therefore, Kushner achieved his goal with flying colors.

I haven't had time to dig into this data since January, but the racial disparity is much worse than this analysis makes it looks. Black and Hispanic people have much shorter life expectancies in the US compared to white people, so the fraction of Black elders who died of covid is several times higher than the fraction of white elders who died of covid. At least, that was the case in January, I need to go reassess the data to see if it's changed.

Could the SARS-COV-2 mRNA proofreading mechanism be an evolutionary response to the hostile environment for viral replication created in bat cells via APOBEC3 and other measures? Wild to think. Also suggests it's less necessary to keep around for infecting humans, would advise an ambitious pandemic virus to ditch it.

I think it's just because of the size of the genome. May also be related to the fact that some parts of the genome are extremely well conserved and may require significant stability to work (such as the fusion domain on the Spike protein, some parts of ORF1a).

I've mentioned this before but here in the Philippines the call center lobby was powerful enough to get themselves exempted from lockdown protocols even in April of 2020 when it was the highest/tightest possible restrictions - like, public transportation was shut down to people either had to walk/bike to the office, or the call centers would organize their own shuttle-bus programs to bring people to the office.

And it's STILL a primary vector for infections up to today.

For some reason call centers and their clients loving love to force people to work in-person.

In cases where call center employees handle billing and payment info, especially taking people's bank account and routing info, companies don't want even the appearance of opportunity for making unknown copies of that info. They're legally on the hook for the privacy and security of that info, and they think it's easier to ensure this from a central, monitored location.

Of course, they should be more legally liable for deaths than hacked accounts, it's just the accounts belong to globally rich people and the deaths are through layers of contractor agencies and are globally poor.

This sort of poo poo is why the CDC really needs to get over their stupid loving aversion to anything that might be considered "analysis". Just make a goddamn definition of "death caused by COVID" and use that instead of confusing everyone by using "death with COVID" so you don't need to make case-by-case determinations. It's not easier to interpret or more straightforward, it's just pretend rear end-covering.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/16/opinions/covid-children-masks-kleinman/index.html

quote:

For the sake of children, keep wearing your mask

-snip-

We began this pandemic with the erroneous conclusion, until things began to change in April, that children were spared the ravages of Covid-19. But over the course of the crisis we have come to understand that children infrequently get very sick and rarely die. As shown in a study published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics in May 2020, while children with at least one identifiable pre-existing condition (including being obese) make up a majority of Covid-19 patients in US and Canadian pediatric ICUs, about 17% of these children had no pre-existing conditions.

Moreover, research published in June 2020 in The New England Journal of Medicine describes the link between Covid-19 and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) as an uncommon but severe and potentially fatal condition that can cause the heart and other organs to fail. MIS-C typically comes from out of the blue, several weeks after an initial Covid-19 infection, which may have presented without any symptoms and thus may have gone undetected. While researchers are working on it, right now we do not know what puts a child at increased risk.

The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that, as of May 6, more than 3.85 million children in the US have tested positive for Covid-19 -- more than 72,000 new cases that week. These numbers are lower bounds as many children with Covid-19 are never tested. Even if only one half of 1% of these children develop a serious illness, that would be 360 children harmed in a single week. The impact of children on the pandemic and the pandemic on children should not be ignored.

There are simply too many unknowns, including the longer-term impact of the virus on children, to risk contagion. Children are on a journey towards their developing maturity. Their experiences before the pandemic influence their health and well-being today, and their experiences today impact their future. We know that, as for adults, Covid-19 can affect children's brains; we do not yet know the long-term implications on their brains or on the development of younger children or adolescents. Neither do we know what physical consequences may lie ahead following infection. Even young patients, for example, may discover a lack of stamina or concentration even after they have seemingly recovered from Covid-19. Researchers are working to learn the range and frequency of long-term affects.

https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Coronavirus/Thailand-Vietnam-and-Cambodia-hit-COVID-variants-with-iron-fist

quote:

BANGKOK/HANOI -- Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia -- all early COVID success stories -- are now using an iron fist on their residents in bids to halt the spread of more virulent variants.

Thailand on May 1 issued a nationwide mask mandate and banned dining in restaurants in Bangkok and elsewhere. The first local transmissions of the U.K. variant were confirmed in early April.

By late that month, the country had counted about 65,000 total COVID-19 cases, more than twice the number reported a month earlier.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha then decided to assume ministerial powers granted by 31 laws, including the Communicable Disease Act. Prayuth said his intention was to consolidate necessary authority to contain the virus's spread, promote vaccinations and improve efficiency.

Other powers Prayuth assumed come from laws on security, cybercrime and other matters. Prayuth is the former army chief who staged Thailand's most recent coup, in May 2014, and who has held on to power with a new constitution that guarantees the military nearly all of the senate's 250 seats.

Now the opposition is accusing Prayuth of establishing a dictatorship in the name of combating COVID-19.

In Vietnam, after confirming local transmissions of the Indian variant, the government on Wednesday decided to extend the mandatory quarantine period to 21 days from 14 for anyone arriving in the country. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, meanwhile, has urged citizens living overseas not to return, fearing they might carry variants with them.

The first local transmissions in more than a month were detected on April 29. After one case was identified, Hanoi, the capital, ordered that karaoke parlors and bars be closed, big events canceled and that masks be worn in public places. Violators are subject to penalties.

Why are countries that had successfully halted the virus's spread now being inundated with new cases? Migrants who freely but illegally go back and forth across borders are receiving much of the blame.

The Vietnamese government said that about 85% of COVID-19 patients who had entered from Cambodia tested positive for the U.K. variant.

Malaysia on Monday announced a fresh nationwide lockdown based on several factors, including the existence of new variants. The lockdown is to last until June 7 but is subject to an extension.

In Cambodia, the capital Phnom Penh and nearby Takmao on April 15 ordered citywide lockdowns. The measures came about two months after viral clusters hit Phnom Penh, then spread across the nation.

Before late February, the country counted only 500 cumulative cases. By late April, however, that number had topped 10,000.

It is believed that Chinese workers who had disregarded quarantine orders and left their designated facilities triggered the spread.

Now Cambodia's government is deporting foreigners who violate quarantines and is not allowing them to reenter.

The government is also penalizing Cambodians who violate stay-at-home orders. In addition, it has ordered more than 200 garment factories -- the country's key employer -- to temporarily halt production.
