Here's a visual for how much can fit in the back of a Niro EV:

That box is 22.5" long / 14.5" high / 16" wide. The hatch closes fine but that's the biggest thing that can fit that direction. I have to put a seat down to fit the clubs, they don't fit well sideways.

I like the color, not necessarily the silhouette. Tesla does a beautiful red, so does Ford - my brother had a red mustang and I loved how it popped. My Volt is red, so arguably, I just like red cars. And nowhere did I mention it was new, afaik Audi and Porsche have done them for a long time. They're just cool.

We're at this really exciting (for me, anyway) time when there are options for just normal-looking cars that are EVs. If this had existed 6 years ago, we absolutely would have bought it instead of the Model S as the follow-on to our Subaru Outback. It took us a while to get comfortable with how showy the Tesla felt: it made us uncomfortable when people noticed it, which was really not our thing. I imagine there are lots of folks like this, but who aren't comfortable making the leap into a car with so many YouTube videos of it with drag racing times.

Very cool. Do you love this car, CannonFodder?

This is awesome. Thanks so much. We are going to check out another few compact suvs, but the ev aspect of the Niro is pretty appealing to us. We plan on having at least one more kid, so probably having another larger vehicle is in the picture at some point in the future, and the ev options might be better at that point, plus we might be able to better afford a nicer one.

The Niro EV is not a flashy car, that's for sure. Unless I'm at a charging station, or the one time I saw a Soul EV and parked next to it and waited to talk to the driver ok that doesn't count, nobody knows it's an EV. Niros in general aren't that popular, there are way more Souls and Sportages and Tellurides out there.

And I hear you about being noticed in a Tesla. My cousin has a Model 3 and a Leaf and has had bro-trucks roll coal on him in the Tesla but never in the Leaf.

I love this car. Over 36k miles in less than 2 years with zero faults and I'm gonna drive this fucker into the ground. After this week and the lake trip where I will use the inflatable float and the golf clubs I'm going to get it detailed.

In a few years Kia will have the K6, Hyundai will have the Ioniq5, Chevy will have a larger Bolt which may be in that range, Tesla has the Y, and Ford has the Mach-E. If battery production can keep up it's going to be an even better market for EVs.

Yeah, if you live / work in an area with spotty CCS coverage it can be difficult. I am very much an outlier with my 150 mile commute each way once a week so I'm not someone to talk to about that. For most people, 200+ mile range with EVSE charging at home is plenty.

Warm the car up before you unplug. Use the seat heaters and turn the cabin temp down. Wear your coat. Do not - and I can't emphasize this enough - use an oxyacetylene torch to remove ice from the windshield wipers.

There are plenty of people in this situation in this thread. If you have specific questions about that, just ask them. I lived with a 24kWh Leaf in Norway for four years without home charging, and now have a model 3 LR.

David wanted you to have this.
Always always always warm the car up while it’s still plugged in. Expect a lot less range. Anecdotally I would say I get about 30% less range when it’s cold and windy out. If your charging location is also cold that will affect the charging rate as well since the car will spend a lot of time warming the battery.

Get a car with a heat pump if possible. Use heated seats and wheel over whacking up the cabin heating.

Bear in mind you won't have excess heat produced by the engine so if you don't clear snow off the car before driving it will just stick around. I use a cover.

Do you have a garage? I’m in Southeast Alaska and, for us, we have to keep a dehumidifier in the garage with the car. All the snow it tracks in caused mold issues without one; our old ICE truck would heat up the undercarriage enough to cook off the moisture but the Leaf does not. It’s a very small price to pay.

Beyond that it’s great. I go around stuck 4x4s every year on the way to the ski lifts; snow tires + FWD > ‘all season’ tires + 4WD.

Keep it plugged in when not using it. Use automatic climate scheduling for your commute if its predictable. If you have a long freeway commute, be prepared for winter range loss of 25-40% so buy enough battery that you don't have to worry about it. Leaving in a warm car really helps so again precondition/preheat the cabin while plugged in before you leave. Rinse the salt/dirt off once a week like any other car. Get a set of winter tires. That's about it.

The Slack Lagoon

Thanks for this. We have a garage but it's unpowered, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to add power. I'll definitely have to do some more planning before we buy our next vehicle.

Between WFH and public transit we don't have a car commute, and our use case is either a short drive to the grocery store or a long drive to visit family or go for a hike do PHEV might be the most we could pull off for now.

As far as conditioning the battery in winter, how much energy does that take? Based on some research I've done it seems like the cost/mile between gas/electric is in the electric's favor - does that change in winter due to the increased energy consumption conditioning the battery?

The Gunslinger
Jul 24, 2004

The extra energy used for preconditioning or preheating the cabin is negligible, I think I spent an extra $30 in the winter total. The cabin heats up very fast, like below zero to toasty hot in under 5 minutes. If you aren't doing long highway commutes then you don't really need to worry about costs of operating in the winter and they would still be better than an ICE anyway.

Adding power to the garage is something you want to do though, get a dryer plug installed there. Check if you have any government incentives to help out with the cost. It is worth doing, charging at home is key to cost savings and convenience with EVs.

I'm pretty disappointed with Porsche on this. Beaten by all the Teslas that cost a quarter of the price. I'd like to see how long the Mach-E GT & EV6 GT can manage on the track.

Edit: Where's the I-Pace love in Japan? I bet those do well on the track since they had a racing series.

The integrated spoiler-wing was designed to lie flat for low drag on the straights and tip-up under braking through the corners. The car's clutchless, semi-automatic transmission kept the driver's left foot free to operate the wing mechanism.

In the Taycan's defense, it is built to compete with the Model S which would have overheated even faster in those exact conditions and done significantly worse.
