I've been listening to a lot of ALAB recently, and it's really hitting right. the way they puncture the illusions of the fairness of legal systems by going through it in precise detail is really great.

my personal fav so far has been ep 21, where they lose it while they describe a lawyer's rebuttal of a black guy's lower compensation (because of lower life expectancy) by asking "how do you know he's black?" in court and watching the expert witness's complete lack of response.

ALAB's interesting to me because it's kinda coming from people with expertise in something other than media stuff, makes it more entertaining for me than, say, Chapo's twitter beefs. Nothing wrong with the media on media stuff, but it's not my first choice for listening to a podcast.

Regarding Time for my Stories, I personally don’t get the purpose of listening to a recap of something I haven’t seen in the first place. it’s analysis for people who’ve watched it rather than a real review for people who haven’t to decide if they will or not, so I’ve only listened to Sopranos, the wire and “gambo” (lol). I’m not expecting anything earth shattering from it and I haven’t been disappointed, it’s more I just like hearing the chapos talk because I agree with 98% of the sentiment 98% of the time

The Wire holds up in the sense that it's got an extremely good and huge ensemble cast that pretty much all give outstanding performances, and it did some neat things with TV narrative filmmaking. A lot of the writing is pretty cringe in retrospect though, and it is EXTREME copaganda, and even at the time I remember feeling like the cop parts were way less interesting than the parts that were just straight up crime drama about competing gangs.

how does whoever that twitter person is spilling the beans on epstein or whatever have any bearing on trueanon, they’ve been covering stuff peripheral to the whole affair for as long as the case has been without momentum. I’m not sure if the implication is they’re party to suppression of truth? or that they just stand to lose money a la homer giving away the flaming moes recipe. in any case seems very well adjusted and I wonder what name they post under here

there are some extremely bad moments in the wire where it seemed the consensus was “actually this is good tv” - the scene where they just say “gently caress” over and over again was really dumb or where they’re staring off into space talking about bringing in brother mouzone (another character that is in fact lame and not cool)

then there’s procedurally dumb stuff that is just not even remembered, like getting the hooker to spy for them, bubbles killing that guy, whatever that dumb crap with the camera and the pigeons was about, aiden gillens entire non presence as a total non entity despite all the build up. no cop would ever be okay with hamsterdam even conceptually. the human traffickers are treated like they’re just smugglers of human corpses, as if the smuggling is the big deal and not the fact these are slaves killed in transit despite establishing the time of death as a crucial part of defining the jurisdiction to handle the case. bad, bad show

there's a lot of cringy lib poo poo on the wire, but worst for me when the stupidest cop on the force gets a Teach for America job and then succeeds because he does the one weird trick from a 90s movie where he gets black kids to pay attention in school by making the lessons about drug deals

it's a shame because that season spends a good amount of time showing the reality of kids living in poverty how it's impossible for them to do well in school under those conditions and then he throws that away for some charter school propaganda BS

Mouzone and Omar are both cartoon characters and honestly The Tales of Omar Little is one of the more distracting parts of the show(though the individual scenes can be hilarious).

The show's even worse when they try to take Omar seriously.

The thing about the education plot is that it's all Ed burns self insert, since in real life he's a cop turned teacher. That he is portrayed sympathetically after blinding a teenager and killing a black cop (with the added gratuitous scene where the blinded kid is shown as in the game) is bad enough. But even they knew that having prez go on about corner kids being too savage for education would be too racist do they had to remake the wise old black cop into an education specialist who monologues at academics and teachers.

Like, you would think that even liberals would object to two white writers creating wise old black characters to launder their rants (the other being gus in s5).

Popy posted:

It's not "pro democrat" because it's Baltimore so everyone is a democrat, but it is 100% liberal talking points and a liberal outlook on solutions.

Carcetti is portrayed as a unsympathetic careerist, but he is never shown as out and out corrupt, but rather is frequently stymied by characters who are out and out corrupt.

Cops are mostly portrayed in a sympathetic light hampered by unsympathetic higher ups.

More fundamentally, the wire's entire political premise is that the issue of poverty, the war on drugs, the decline of newspapers, the cycle of poverty, etc. are not at all about material conditions. They are about failing institutions, and if only you fixed the failing institutions...

Education is solved by a teacher who cares. Schools are portrayed as not actually underfunded, but just controlled by teachers who don't even care that they have a basement full of computers. Material conditions are never portrayed as the reason for the drug trade. Rather, again and again it is shown that drug trade gains go strictly to ostentation 100% "culture of poverty" poo poo. The one kid out of season 4 that "makes it" is one that is shown from the start as being a matter of having the right role models, rather than material conditions (Namond was already the most comfortable of the bunch, it was just a matter of getting his out of his mom's house and into Colvin's). Marlo is like the definition of the "super predator" idea. And just in case Prez's "just need teachers who care" shtick didn't convince you, you have Cutty's boxing gym.

Problem with newspapers is not one of material needs. In fact, the show goes out of its way to show that the newspaper was profitable even before the cuts.
Problem with the drug trade isn't one of poverty and material privations. No, in fact we have the top 2 drug dealers explicitly reject material wealth because they cared more about their names. Hell, all the drug dealers arrested have excellent representation throughout. The kids who go into the drug trade are shown as being motivated not by money, but by role models. There is a whole plot of bunk lecturing Omar about the role model he is. Oh, and just to make things even neater, Omar is shown as the samurai with a code, when real life Omar was much more of a mixed bag (as opposed to "i never put my gun on civilians" wire version).
The only people who are shown acting in accordance to any material conditions in the entire show are the union folks in season 2.

Carcetti is a not-at-all-veiled reference to Martin O'Malley, the guy who decided he should run against Hillary Clinton in 2016 as the white guy with a ton of corruption in his background and no policy differences from Hillary.

(And whose campaign was run by frequent Chapo topic Lis Smith who went on to run Agent Pete's campaign.)
