I think one of the great socialist movements in America was actual military veterans. Especially in WWI, all of the yokels who had never been to the next town were suddenly given nice clothes, shoes, and were drinking espresso in Paris. Most people can’t go back to being a yokel after that.

Well until someone stole it cause he was too cowardly to shoot someone for takin' his god-given properteh! Also, a lot of people missed it cause it wasn't in the main segment, but he did a piece on Israel/Palestine that framed the situation there as apartheid and called what Isreal is doing war crimes. Even though LWT tends to lean progressive, they're still very much in the liberal sphere so to see it take such a stance feels like a notable shift in perception—at least by the stand of the U.S. where seeing any major source openly criticize Isreal, let alone condemn them, is quite rare.

I think there's a couple things he left out there:
Also gently caress murderers into the dirt and gently caress the people who encourage and assist them. For a little bit that also veered into the horrifyingly racist judicial system and squalid prison conditions, but that's not the focus today. Like that scrubjay though.

For more on the scrub jay here is a video about how state birds are garbage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAZI5GcPm8c Also I would be very surprised if that NRA lady's story was even true in the first place.
|
# ? May 18, 2021 22:36 |
|
I don't see why it couldn't be true. It's basically an officer telling her "please don't shoot people or threaten to shoot people". Which is doubly believable next to the clip of an officer trying very hard to dissuade a man from going out to murder people. It also doesn't really sound like she's describing them making any real threats, just pulling up to her and harassing her by talking to her, which does happen. And guns get sold on the promise of giving you a confidence boost from holding the power to murder someone, so why not pull out a gun when you're feeling uncomfortable? And you're white, so why not talk to a police chief about your experience?

I had never heard of that lady so I thought he was gonna talk about the lady whose parents were murdered in the Luby's massacre and she had to leave her gun in the car due to Texas law at the time. She got elected to the state legislature and helped weaken gun control laws under the delusion she would've stopped the gunman if she had her gun in her purse.

Her story is that car-full of dudes harassed her on the street, a perennial reality for young women. But whether they actually constituted a physical threat vs. being scumbags who wanted to feel powerful through words is unclear, since she instantly escalated the situation to life or death. It's mostly interesting how direct the line is between this and actual murders by police: the perception of fear or danger by the right protected class of person instantly becomes the forensic reality. Maybe these guys wanted to cause specific physical harm, maybe they didn't...but de facto it's the former because this legislation is built on the assumption her fear was valid. It's ridiculous on its face that random citizens' perception of the event is enough for authorities to go on (especially after someone literally dies), but it's even more ridiculous to me that police - a profession that assumes you can objectively assess risk - has even less scrutiny on an individual or systemic level after SO MANY suspicious deaths.

Hats off to that actress, by the way. If I hadn't known better and instead saw one of these segments in the wild, I would have thought she truly believed in this product. I mean, I wouldn't have bought it, because the not-even-pseudo-science nonsense she was spouting was patently preposterous. And, "developed in Germany 80 years ago" is hard to miss. But drat if she didn't come off as sincere, excited, and believable, especially given the script she was working with.

While I'd prefer they stay without a audience it does change some dynamics in the show with and without one. With a audience, getting a mascot is silly and amusing. Without a audience, a man is hiring a person to stand around in a fursuit with him in a empty room while he stares at a camera.
